Lutheran Church of the Cross - Annual Spring Cleanup 2020

This year is very different and we simply can not do the clean-up in the normal manner during the pandemic.  Attached is a list of cleaning duties for volunteers to pick from and to complete in a safe manner over a few weeks time. The highlighted items have been taken already.
You may contact church office at
lutheranchurchofthecross@shaw.ca or call 250-477-6222 for the sign up.   Thank you to several people who already have begun helping with the spring cleanup at Church of the Cross. Some have worked in small groups, physically distancing, while others worked alone. Your contributions are all making a big difference to keeping our building and spaces clean and in good shape. If you still want to help see the notice in this edition of Crossroads to sign up. Every little bit helps.
Announcement & Final Tally of COVID- Urgent Food Support Fund
The Shelbourne Community Kitchen team is excited to announce that the Kitchen's COVID-19 Urgent Food Support Fund officially raised $32,115! Thanks to the Fund, our team hasn't missed a single day of service, has established a home delivery service and continues to offer the same fresh, healthy and respectful food support that the Pantry program is known for. We did this despite a sharp increase in new registrants right when we had to cancel multiple food drives and fundraising events due to the pandemic. We are so encouraged by the incredible community support and we send our heart-felt thanks to everyone for their generous donations. Thank you for helping to make our work possible. Looking for more updates and information? Stay tuned as the latest edition of our e-newsletter "The Scoop" is coming out soon!
Call-out process
Over the past few months. Board of Care for Communities has worked with 14 volunteers to do a regular call-out to all church members.  Though we were calling everyone on a regular basis in the first few months, in consultation with the pastors, we have now decided to call less regularly.
We will be touching base with everyone once in a while and some a bit more.  We hope you have enjoyed these call-outs because we have very much enjoyed keeping in touch with you all.
Harriet Freytag and her family would like to thank everyone for their wonderful tributes on Facebook, most of which Ralferd was able to see before his passing. It was a great comfort to know how loved and appreciated he was. We would also like to thank everyone for their emails and phone calls and the many offers of concrete as well as emotional support. We feel blessed and uplifted by your care for us. You are truly the embodiment of Christ's love for us at this time. - Freytag Family
Dessert & Dialogue: Indigenous Voices During COVID-19

Thank you to everyone who joined the the Dessert & Dialogue livestream this past Tuesday. The video is still available on the web-site when you click “Livestream” and check past videos. It is also on the church’s Facebook page, and YouTube channel.

Thanks also to everyone who helped make this event a success, including Raven Hartley and Ryan Pielle our guests from Native Friendship Centre in Victoria, as well as livestream support from Tarynn McKenzie, Craig Knight (chair of TRC), and Brian Wismath. Thanks also to Dana for providing flowers.

We have already received some feedback on how to improve a livestream conversation like this and look forward to hosting more of these in the future. It is a significant undertaking to host such events, in part because of the organizing needed to book guests and the conversations leading up to the event itself, as well as the technical support needed, both for setup and during the event.. Thanks to Truth and Reconciliation Committee for their ongoing support of this work.
READY OR NOT – AGING OUT OF CARE AT 19

On Tuesday 23 June, 7 pm to 8:30 pm the new film, Aging out of Care at 19 – about 2 BC youth who are followed for 2 years after they leave the “system” at age 19 will be live streamed at
https://streamofconsciousness.ca/evenbt/19-and-homeless to register for your free ticket.

The film maker Maureen Palmer will share her insights and learnings from the making of this film.

In BC when youth are in government care and reach 19 years of are they often lose access to essential support services such as housing, social worker, mental health and finances.   Learn about this situation.  The film is presented by Threshold Housing – a local agency that provides housing and services to youth 16-22.

If you want more information contact Don Storch,
dstorch@shaw.ca or 250-686-9947.  Let me know what you think after you watch the film.  Feel free to invites others that might be interested. Thanks.

Physical activity research study
Behavioural Medicine Lab at the University of Victoria is trying to understand if a significant life change, like retiring or having your last child leave home, is a good time to promote behaviour change and encourage physical activity through an online activity program. They are hoping to recruit people who have either recently retired and/or become empty nesters (within 6 months) and who are currently engaging in less than 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous activity per week.  They know that living an active life has many benefits for both physical and mental health, so they hope to find participants and help foster an even healthier community. The study is done entirely online and through email, so there are no concerns with COVID-19 and physical distancing.
For anyone who fits the criteria, is interested in taking part in a 10-week exercise program, or has any questions about the study, can email them at
bml@uvic.ca
