Resuming In-person Worship

13 people, in addition to Pastor Lyndon, Assisting Minister Maya, pianist, choral scholars and IT helpers, participated in the practice run for in-person worship on August 16 which included holy communion.  It was encouraging to see people present in the sanctuary for worship and to know livestreaming continues to provide a meaningful time of worship for those at home.

On Tuesday, August 25 at 7pm, there will be a Dessert and Dialogue on the plan to resume in-person worship beginning Sunday, August 30.  You will learn more details about what to expect if you plan on being present for in-person worship on upcoming Sundays. Information on participation in the Zoom format for this event will be provided in a separate email.  Livestreaming of worship will continue to be available for those worshipping at home.
Registering for in-person worship on August 30

Worship will be limited to 35 people in the congregationIf you wish to join in worship on Sunday, August 30, please email or call the church office to indicate your intention to be present. Based on the experience we gain and lessons learned from in-person worship in August, we will plan for in-person worship into the fall. We will continue to livestream worship every Sunday as well.
A letter from Chet Phillips, Lead Organizer of Greater Victoria Acting Together.

I am reaching out to you tonight as faith leaders with GVAT member organizations and organizational allies. Some of you have already come to the legislature grounds to offer blessings and support for the women and men of UNITE HERE 40, hotel and hospitality workers on hunger strike to protect their right to return to their jobs when and if those jobs are brought back. Today I am asking for your help in spreading the word about our candlelight vigil, Thursday, August 20 at 9 pm on the legislature grounds. I am asking if any of you can come once more and offer blessings for the workers.

Last week I spent time kneeling in the grass with a woman who has worked 12 years for one hotel and now fears losing her job just so that the hotel can save money by replacing her with a worker they can pay less than those who've been there longer. She wept in anguish that many of her peers were afraid to even be there striking for fear that taking action by itself might cost them their jobs. She wept because our BC Government claims to be pro-labour and yet doesn't want to "intervene" here when they've already intervened on behalf of the business community (extending layoff periods before businesses must pay severance).

These workers are among the lowest paid and most vulnerable in our economy. They are mostly women, mostly people of color, and many are immigrants.

As a community of those who keep faith with our own communities by upholding our highest shared values of love and care, I hope you can join me in amplifying this call for support tomorrow evening. You can also refer those interested to
www.gvat.ca/campaigns for more information and an easy to send letter template for Premier Horgan's office.
A New Home for the Shelbourne Community Kitchen!

As you may know, the Temporary Use Permit that has allowed the Kitchen to operate in our little house at 3541 Shelbourne St is coming to an end this fall.  Over the past two years, our team has been working incredibly hard to identify a new facility that would meet our organization's budget and program requirements.

We are happy to announce that the Shelbourne Community Kitchen has identified our next facility and we are currently in the process of signing a lease!

The Shelbourne Community Kitchen will be moving from its current location to the ground floor of Lutheran Church of the Cross, located at 3787 Cedar Hill Rd.  The move will happen this fall. An exact date is not yet confirmed.

Why we love our new home:
•            The new location is just 7 blocks away (1.1 km) from our current facility, so the Kitchen will be staying in the same great neighbourhood we have come to know and love.
•            Our new facility will be twice the size of our current location and will provide more space for our many programs.
•            The space is in the same building as the Kitchen’s new food storage area, which will greatly improve the efficiency of our daily operations.
•            While we will be located in the same building as the Lutheran Church of the Cross, the Shelbourne Community Kitchen will operate as an independent tenant with a separate street entrance to our new space located on the ground floor.
•            We plan to offer the same great programs and services that our organization has become known for within the protocols presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

What you need to know as one of our amazing volunteers:

•            We will update our volunteers regularly with progress about the move.
•            We will continue to provide the same great programs and services for our participants at our current location as renovations begin and the move draws closer.
•            While many of our volunteer positions will remain the same, our work schedule and regular tasks may change once we settled into our next location. We will provide ample notice should your volunteer schedule be affected and we will let you know of any new volunteer positions that will be available as things develop.
•            Existing COVID-19 protocols will remain in place at the Kitchen’s current location and will be reviewed after a move to the new location pending the situation in the fall.

Please visit our website to view our
Facility Move FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for more information.

Our team will provide regular updates and information as things progress and give all of our members ample notice in advance of the move. It is the Kitchen’s intent that the move not disrupt the services currently offered to participants.

Watch the Kitchen’s website and social media for ongoing updates about the move.
All the best,

Clarice Dillman, Board Chair
Kim Cummins, Program Director
and the Shelbourne Community Kitchen Board of Directors
Distant but Together: Sponsoring Refugees during a Global Pandemic

Thanks to those who were able to participate in this “zoominar” on Tuesday, August 18! We hope the discussion was interesting and informative. As we discussed, the situation for refugees has been made worse and even more risky by the global pandemic. Our concern and actions are an act of love for those who need it the most.

Many of us have had the pleasure and privilege to be involved with refugee sponsorship for the past several years. For me, I have learned that a sponsorship is not about solving the worldwide problem, but it is simply about accompanying one person or one family at a time. I have had the chance to see individuals and families come out of the airport “Arrivals” door at YYJ and welcome them to our beautiful city of Victoria – no longer refugees, but newcomers to Canada! It is a life changing experience for both the newcomer and the welcomer. Through the smiles and gratitude, I have seen the relief in the eyes of the individuals and of hope in the eyes of parents knowing that they and their children are safe, and they can begin a new life.

I encourage you to consider how you might become involved in refugee support. You may want to join a team of people working with refugee sponsorship. Please contact any member of the Social Justice Committee or the church office if you are interested or have any questions. If you have already donated or pledged financially following our zoominar, thank you! And we will continue to receive donations. You may use the following link:
www.lutheranvictoria.ca and click on “Giving”. This link provides a list of giving options available through the church including: online, mailing a cheque, direct banking or dropping a cheque or cash off at the Church.
With sincere thanks,

Sherry Coughlin

Threshold Housing 30th Anniversary

Threshold Housing provides housing and programing for homeless youth ages 16-24. 30 years ago a group of laypersons from St. John the Divine Anglican Church decided to do something about homelessness in Victoria.

Today, THS manages 4 homes for youth, and 14 independent apartments. A full range of teaching services are provided, things such a financial planning, food preparation, life planning and being a renter are among the courses offered. THS receives some funding for individual youth from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, some grants, and results of fundraising.

On Saturday 12 September, the 30th Anniversary will be celebrated by a gala dinner and program and you are invited to participate.  This will be a “celebrate at home event”.  A Gala box is available to ticket holders.   It contains a 3 course meal a bottle of wine and a gift.  The Gala boxes are to be picked up from 1 -4 pm on the 12th, the program runs from 6 to 7:30 on Zoom. Volunteers Needed for Outdoor Saturday Garage Sale

The Social Justice Community has an opportunity to join Broad View United Church (formerly St Aidan's) on Saturday August 22nd at their outdoor Saturday Garage Sales occurring throughout August.

There is no charge to SJC for setting up tables.  This is a good opportunity to raise money for our Refugee Fund and it allows SJC members to remove the jewellery & accessories collected and stored in garages or basements since the postponement of the fall Fundraiser. Any items unsold will be donated to the BVUC Thrift Store.

The Social Justice Community is looking for volunteers to help with shifts on Saturday Aug 22nd between 9 am-2 pm.  People are needed for: set-up 9 am - 10 am, to oversee tables during the sale (10 am - 1 pm), and to help pack up remaining items from 1 - 2 pm, take down and sanitize tables.

To ensure maximum safety for all....
- we will follow BC Health Authority COVID 19 regulations/precautions
- we will piggy-back with what BVUC has in place for the sale: directional arrows, chalk lines on pavement, limiting per tables, physical distancing, hand sanitizing,
- we will wear masks & gloves and make a contact list of attendees and volunteers
If you are able to volunteer on Saturday August 22nd between 9 am to 2 pm please contact Susanne Standeven

SALISH SEA FESTIVAL: A WEEK OF LANTERNS

Due to COVID-19, the annual Salish Sea Lantern Festival and parade cannot proceed as planned; however, in its place ArtSea brings you the Salish Sea Festival: A Week of Lanterns, August 16-22, 2020. This is an opportunity for everyone to participate in building community spirit.

ArtSea is offering several opportunities to build-your-own lantern, with online lantern-building tutorials and small, in-person workshops. During the week of August 16th to 22nd, we invite the community to light up their lanterns (with battery-operated lights) each night at 7pm. Lanterns can be displayed on a front lawn, hung from a balcony, or displayed in a front window; anywhere that they are visible to the community and can be enjoyed by everyone. And there are prizes for the best lantern display (see below). This is a wonderful opportunity to be creative and be part of a community project in a time when community is most important.

ELCIC members encouraged to respond with prayers, financial support following devastation in Lebanon; donations made before August 24 will be matched

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada's (ELCIC) National Bishop Susan C. Johnson urges members to prayer for all who have been affected by the recent devastation in Lebanon and to support relief efforts.
