Worshiping Online as a Family

Grace to you and Peace in this "extraordinary" time from all of the McDonald family. We have been especially appreciative of the opportunity to continue worshiping with many of you thanks to the Live-Streaming made possible by our Church staff and volunteers. It has also enabled us to Worship with family, both near and far, more regularly.

Since Palm Sunday, several members of our family have been able to join in worship together using the online platform "Zoom" - we set up the livestream at my home, and my parents (who have a paid Zoom account) set up a Zoom meeting. We then share the service broadcast through Zoom so that we can all watch together at the same time, while continuing to interact with each other visually throughout the service. Since the audio is "live" at our home, the other attendees also get the full experience of worshiping with our active toddler, and some of the singing is shared.

This past week we had in attendance those of us at our house (Candyce, Nathan, Julian, and Candyce's father Del); Nathan's parents Mac and Darlys; Chris and Alissa; and some other Abbotsford friends.

We have found this to be a great way to participate in Worship as a group, and a good way to connect as a family on a weekly basis. If anyone would like more details on the logistics of how to make this happen, feel free to reach out to Nathan at
mac.nathan@gmail.com

Peace be with you all - we miss seeing you in person!
Nathan, Candyce, and Julian McDonald
Dessert and Dialogue via Zoom, Tuesday, May 5, 7 – 8:15 PM
“Virtual” Holy Communion – What does this mean/What is that?

We are a Word and Sacrament community in the Lutheran tradition, and there have been conversations and different practises across the ELCIC of Holy Communion during this time of pandemic and physical distance that prevents us from gathering around the table. We will discuss various perspectives offered by some who have written about this and share our own thoughts and feelings about Holy Communion in this extraordinary time. Written materials and the Zoom invitation will be distributed via email next week. Everyone may prepare their own dessert at home! If you have any questions or comments please contact Pastors Lyndon or Lyle or the Church office.
Shelbourne Community Kitchen

We are very pleased to announce that the Kitchen received $20,000 from the Rapid Relief Fund of Victoria to assist with ongoing food support in our community. Thank you to everyone for your continuing support.
Why donate to the Shelbourne Community Kitchen's Urgent Food Support Fund?
Because we know that having reliable access to fresh healthy food and people you can call for support can make a world of difference...especially right now. In the past three weeks alone, our Pantry program received and filled over 250 requests for food support and we are registering new members every day. And while our team is now a fraction of its original size, we dedicate time every week to call the members who we know are especially vulnerable right now and don't have computers at home to check in. We offer service updates and tell them "Yes! We are still open and here to help in any way we can."
The Shelbourne Community Kitchen might be a small organization, but we have a great big heart. If you are able to do so - please make a donation to the Urgent Food Support Fund today so that we can meeting the increasing demand, and share this post with your family, friends and neighbours!

May 2, 2020 Garden Sale & Fund Raiser for Shelbourne Community Kitchen is canceled.
Pray for frontline workers. Please pray for the people of Luther Court and all residents and staff of care facilities. And please pray for all frontline workers, in healthcare, law enforcement, in grocery stores and other essential services, in government and community service organizations, that all would be safe and well.

Your Neighbourhood Response Team, Working Together While Apart: Keep it Clean Collection of Shampoo, Toothbrushes etc.

VICTORIA, BC – We all know that keeping clean is helping contain the spread of COVID-19. But imagine if you didn’t have a home and running water or couldn’t afford to get basic personal hygiene products to keep safe and clean during this pandemic.
Our Neighbourhood Response Team is back, powered by United Way Greater Victoria and working in partnership with Better Business Bureau serving Vancouver Island, Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Victoria, HeroWork Society and Soap for Hope Canada. This time we are joining together to safely collect new, unopened shampoo, toothbrushes and other personal hygiene products on Saturday, April 25 from 10 am to 2 pm in three locations:
  • Parking lot of Westshore Learning Centre, 2139 Sooke Road, Colwood – please follow the clearly marked signage that indicates the entrance and exit
  • Parking lot of Tulista Park, 9565 Fifth Street, Sidney
  • Parking lot of Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, 1925 Blanshard Street, Victoria - enter the parking lot off Pembroke Street between Quadra and Blanshard and follow the directions of the traffic volunteers. Please do not enter the parking lot off of Caledonia – this entrance is for the Victoria Police Department only.
Simply drive up, pop the trunk and drop off these new, unopened products:
  • Shampoo and hair conditioner, any size containers
  • Body wash and body lotion
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss
  • Sunscreen
  • Razors for men and women
  • Pads, tampons and incontinence products
Please respect physical distancing by staying in your vehicles at all times and following volunteer instructions. Volunteers will be following safe practices.

Online Giving

Church of the Cross has begun offering on-line giving.

We have partnered with Tithely, the company that hosts our website, and offers on-line giving services for churches.

To check this out simply visit the church web-site: LutheranVictoria.ca and click on the “Giving” menu tab. Here we are listing different ways you can give to the congregation, including a link to on-line giving through Tithely. You will have the option either to make a one-time donation or click “Sign Up” to create an account with Tithely to track your on-line giving. If you choose to sign up you will be instructed to choose a four digit PIN number for increased security each time you log in.

Is on-line giving right for you? We encourage people to give in ways they find comfortable. Traditional ways of giving whether through the envelope system, e-transfer, and direct deposit have the added benefit of not having service fees. On-line giving with Tithely includes a service fee of 2.9% and $0.30 per transaction for VISA and MasterCard, 3.5% and $0.30 per transaction for AMEX. Tithely gives you the option to offset the service fee charge. As more people expect and are comfortable with on-line giving, we hope to serve folks who prefer this option, who we might otherwise miss. This encourages support from a wider on-line community, including people who join us for on-line worship beyond Victoria.

If you have questions about on-giving please speak with Barry Walker, financial secretary.
Call Barry at: 250-381-1698  or send him an e-mail:
bhwalker@shaw.ca or contact the church office.

Applause to Luther Court Volunteers from Lutheran Church of the Cross

National Volunteer Week organizers this year invite us to cheer on volunteers. We certainly have a lot to give thanks for at Luther Court. There are about 90 volunteers here with the common virtue of having a heart for people. The many volunteers from Lutheran Church of the Cross bring care and compassion to enrich the Luther Court community.

Some of our volunteers were residents at Luther Court who died this year. We say thank you to Steve, George and Helen for their assistance in flower watering, Drum circle and helping hands. Their presence is still missed. Their smiles can be our smiles as we remember them.

Due to COVID precautions at this time volunteers have had to keep some distance from the usual social connections. I look forward to the time when we can freely come and go again. The list of ways volunteers cheer and participate in life at Luther Court is immense. Clap your hands and cheer as you read through this list of volunteer positions and actions that bring wholeness to life at Luther Court : Activity assistants,  Helping Hands to prepare decorations, Garden Café serving, Luther Court board and committee members, Lutheran Church of the Cross (Sunday services, communion distribution and seasonal celebrations), Anglican communion, Roman Catholic mass and communion, Pacific Animal Therapy Society, devotional leadership and accompaniment and portering, Hair Salon portering, newspaper delivery, kitchen internship, baking, income tax, one to one visiting, special music, dancing partner, knitting, Gift shop, walking companion, poetry reading, Adult Day program assistant, watering plants, Birthday party, laminating, Voices in Motion choir partners, choir book Preparation, yoga, Scrabble, magic shows, Junior volunteers, and mealtime greeters.

Thanks be to God for volunteers!

On behalf of the Residents, Staff and the Leadership Team here at Luther Court we hold our hands up with applause!

Thank you and blessings,

Ed Chell
