Time of Creation - The Story of Stuff
“Have you ever wondered where all the stuff we buy comes from, and where it goes when we throw it out?“ – that’s how Annie Leonard starts her highly educational, eye-opening and slightly disturbing journey through The Story of Stuff. In 20 minutes, she thoroughly analyzes the problems with our production and consumption patterns. According to The Story of Stuff’s website (https://storyofstuff.org/), this short video “exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.”
Intrigued? You can watch The Story of Stuff at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GorqroigqM
If you want to read some interesting statistics on consumption related topics, you may find the Story of Stuff fact sheet of interest:
http://storyofstuff.org//wp-content/uploads/movies/scripts/StoryofStuff_FactSheet.pdf
And if you are now totally discouraged or outraged or both, and you wonder what we can all do to stop our self-destructive habits, there is The Story of Solutions to give you some great ideas of how we can collectively break the cycle and move our economy in a more sustainable and just direction.
Watch The Story of Solutions at: https://storyofstuff.org/movies/the-story-of-solutions/ to find out how we can change the rules of the game and chart a new path from “more” to “better”!

Celebrate the 12th Anniversary of the Sanctuary’s Dedication with a Mortgage Reduction Donation
Next Sunday, Holy Cross Sunday, will be 12 years since we dedicated the new sanctuary. In celebration of this event we solicit donations toward the reduction of the mortgage principal. Current monthly payments are about $4,100.00 of which $2,600.00 is applied to the mortgage principal and $1,500.00 is applied to the interest. Sunday, September 15th is an opportunity to help reduce the principal owing. Every little bit helps. Mark your envelope “Mortgage principal reduction” or “Mortgage Reduction”.
Thank- you for all your support.

Five decades of Grace: into “life in all its fullness” (John 10:10)
Pastoring has been my way of life in the full embrace of wholeness in which the integration of intellect, relationship, the physical and the spiritual are all essential. I have felt blessed in the work of a Church firmly planted in the world where faith is indispensable in science, religion, carpentry or sailing, as it is in my marriage.
The shape of that integration has changed immensely for me. Where it once was grounded in ‘grace’ defined by information and concepts, it has grown into a fullness of life in relationships and experience of life. Instead of definition, grace is now an infinition. (R. Howe) E.g. The incarnation of God in Jesus for me now also sanctifies Luther’s celebration of “wine, woman and song” toward the delight of my image of God having grown into that of an artist - painting, pottering, and puttering a world and life, with me in it imaging my ‘gracious heavenly Father’ (Luther) being fully a part of creativity. That growth blesses me daily. I appreciate each of you for your uniqueness as gift of God for the people of God (R.Caemmerer Jr.), as I do chopping wood (a compliment!)
In this 80th year of mine I still have the privilege of sharing that journey in a half dozen congregations, each of which is its own work of art.
Soli deo Gloria (J.S. Bach) Alfred F. Maier

STEAM is a new program offered this fall.
STEAM =
Science Technology Engineering Arts Math.
STEAM After School program will meet weekly on Tuesdays, beginning Tues., Sept. 17, 2019, 3:30 to 5:00 PM, at Lutheran Church of the Cross. We will meet for eight weeks, until Nov. 5, and will gauge interest whether to continue into November.
There will be another STEAM after school program beginning mid-January 2020.
This will be for kids age: 10 to 17 primarily but we can make exceptions.
We will begin in September with an introduction to HTML programming. In this course kids will learn the basics about creating their own simple web-site using code. If possible kids should bring a laptop of any kind or Windows based tablet with them. If there is either a USB port or dongle with USB port on the computer this would be helpful. T.J. Silver, with Church of the Cross, will be leading this course.
STEAM Evening program will be on Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:00 PM beginning
Thursday, September 26, at Lutheran Church of the Cross. This will also run for eight weeks. This will include the same introduction to HTML programming as the after school class.
We thank T.J. for generously designing and teaching this course.
If you have any questions please speak to T.J. Silver, Pastor Lyndon or Pastor Lyle.

A panel discussion will follow with renowned women's heart advocate and speaker Carolyn Thomas, as well as other Vancouver Island heart patients seen in the video, Laurie Blakely and Zamira Vicenzino. The event is free and all are welcome, but registration is required as seating is limited. Refreshments will be served.
