The deadline for all Crossroads submissions is Wednesday at 12 noon.

Please visit our website for more information about us and our events.
You are invited...

....to an afternoon recital of Art Song here at the church on Saturday, September 3, at 2:30pm. Admission is by donation. Our Kantor, Nathan McDonald, will be joined by mezzo-soprano Kiiri Michelsen and pianist Frank Zieginson in a program of music exploring the wonder of Seasons: a fitting way to welcome the beginning of a new school "season" and the beginning of our own Season of Creation in our Worship life together. Come join us!
A special invitation

You are invited to attend a Middle Eastern Soiree at Congregation Emanu-El Synagogue (1461 Blanshard Street) on Sunday, September 11, 2022, 5:30 to 8:30 PM.

Throughout the evening there will be an opportunity to socialize while enjoying beverages, including beer and wine, and some finger food in the social hall.

Also, live music will be provided by Steluta, a professional band that will be playing a mix of Middle Eastern and other types of ethnic tunes in the sanctuary from 6:30 to 8:00. We invite those who wish to do so to join in some dancing. Masks are recommended.

The goal of this musical evening is to raise funds for a multi-faith project in Victoria BC, which has been launched to provide sponsorship for a Syrian family of 6 currently taking refuge in Southeaster Asia. Members of Congregation Emanu-El Synagogue and Lutheran Church of the Cross are working together to sponsor this family and to bring them to a new and safe life in Victoria.

We look forward to seeing you at this event which promises to be a lot of fun and will go a long way towards bringing this deserving family to safety in Victoria. Space is limited!  Please contact Sherry Coughlin (sherry_coughlin@yahoo.ca) or the church office for RSVP by September 8 so we can plan effectively.

Hope to see you there!
Sherry Coughlin, on behalf of the Sponsorship Team

Season of Creation

We begin the Season of Creation (Sept. 1 – Oct. 4) this Sunday with a new setting of the worship space and musical setting of the liturgy – “Tree of Life.” Everyone is invited and encouraged to renew our efforts and prayers for the wellbeing of a climate and planet in crisis in many parts of the world and impacting many people’s lives, often the most poor and vulnerable. This year's theme is "Listen to the voice of creation." This is an opportunity to affirm the Lutheran World Federation's commitment to address climate change through liturgy, prayer and action.

Sunday, September 11, Holy Cross Sunday

We will celebrate the Festival of Holy Cross next on Sunday, September 11 at 10 AM. As the festival connected to our name as a congregation “at the crossroads” and the 15th anniversary of opening the new sanctuary in 2007, it is a day to give thanks and celebrate. It has also been a day for some to give special offerings to reduce the mortgage on the building addition which is now less than one third of the original amount thanks to the generous donations of so many over these fifteen years. If you would like to make a donation, please use the “give online” button on our website at lutheranvictoria.ca, or e-transfer to the church office at lutheranchurchofthecross@shaw.ca or an envelope with the designation “mortgage reduction.” And everyone is invited to wear red if you wish to celebrate this festival day.
National Church Work Ending

As many of you will know, but others may not, I have been working as a deployed part time Assistant to the Bishop – Worship in the National ELCIC office since 2010. After considerable time of thought and prayer and discussion with Bishop Susan and Michael as Chair of the congregation, I have resigned my position with the National Church, effective the end of this year. I will have served 12 years, and I feel it is time to have fewer roles in my ministry and an important time to give this opportunity to someone else to provide staff support to worship in the ELCIC. I have appreciated this opportunity very much. And I want to thank the congregation for making it possible for me to serve in this way. - Pastor Lyle
A craft for one and all

As part of the Sustainable Clothing Show & Tell event, the Board of Education is hosting a craft afternoon on Saturday, October  1, 2022 from 1 – 3 PM. We will be making a woven cloth basket using material edges from a local clothier. The basket can be used for treasures or be given as a gift. Any questions please call Rose at 250-727-0633. A sign up sheet will be outside the church offices. All materials will be supplied.
Thank you

I would like to thank the wonderful people of our church for their help, kindness, phone calls, emails and letters, visits and taking me out. All was most appreciated. It is great to have such a lovely church family.
May the Lord bless you.
Eva Baird
Thank you

We would like to thank the congregation for recognizing the twentieth anniversary of our being at Church of the Cross this past Sunday. The wonderful words by Dana on behalf of the congregation, and by others, the flowers, and cake, were all a delightful surprise and very kind and thoughtful. Thank you again. We love and feel very blessed to be part of this community.

- Lori and Lyle McKenzie
Holy Communion

Would you like to assist with preparing for our Sunday Worship?
The Altar Guild is the traditional church name for the group of people who plan and prepare for Holy Communion each week. Historically at Church of the Cross, the members of the Altar Guild have been women, but we have made a welcomed move away from this practice.
More people are needed in the rotation to prepare Holy Communion and clean up at the end of Sunday Worship. Marge Adams serves as the coordinator, and she can answer any questions you have and arrange a learning session if you decide you would like to participate.
If you would like to know more about what is involved and the time commitment, please call Marge Adams at 250-590-5732 or contact the church office.

Helping Hands Needed

Thanks to your generosity and support, our Lutheran Church of the Cross community has been able to bring several former refugees to a new and safe life in Victoria.  We have received a request to sponsor a single individual by a family member with whom we have co-sponsored others before.  We would be pleased to honour what appears to be a financially low risk sponsorship but have great need of a few individuals who would be willing to act as those working closest with the family and this individual.  Once this ‘core group’ is established, we will seek official approval from the SJC and Council to set the wheels in motion.  If you are interested and would like to know more about the commitment and help this might involve, please contact Sherry Coughlin (sherry_coughlin@yahoo.ca) or the church office.

Thank you,
The Social Justice Committee
