Welcome Student Sunday, September 22 at 10 AM.
Welcome new and returning post secondary students this Sunday. You are an important part of the Church of the Cross community and we hope you feel supported here. The gift bags for each of you are a small expression of that support. Thank you to all who were able to donate to the bags.
God blessings and peace be with you.
Vision and Priorities Planning Day – Saturday, September 28, 10am -12 noon
What is your vision for Church of the Cross for the future? What priorities would you
identify for the ministry together? All people connected to Church of the Cross are invited to a vision and priority process on Saturday, September 28, 10am – 12noon at the church. 2020 is the 60th anniversary of the congregation. As we look forward, we want to pray and work to identify clear priorities together. Your participation is invited and important. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Lyndon, Pastor Lyle, or Joanne Solomonson, Chair of the Congregation through the church office. Again, everyone is invited and encouraged to participate.
Praying Friends and Orange Shirt Sunday –
September 29 at 10 AM.

The Praying Friends program, having adults
volunteer to pray for the children and youth of the congregation, will begin again on Sunday, September 29. If a family has not been contacted and you would like a child or youth to be included and/or if you would like to be a praying volunteer, please contact Thiago Hinkel at thiagohinkel@uvic.ca or the church office. This is also Orange Shirt Sunday when everyone, and especially children, are invited to wear their orange shirts and clothing to remember all those affected by residential schools in Canada.
Anniversary Mortgage Reduction
We currently have a church
mortgage of $470,000.00.  On September 15, 2019 the celebration of the 12th anniversary of the dedication of our worship space, a total of $4,925.00 was generously donated to help reduce the mortgage principal.  You can make donations to reduce the mortgage principal throughout the year if you wish - just because or in memory of a friend or loved one or to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other event.  Please mark on the envelope “Mortgage Reduction”. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support as you are able.
Stewardship Committee
Welcoming those who are new in October
Two or three times a year Church of the Cross
welcomes those who are new and others who have decided to become members of the congregation. Planning is underway for this to take place in October. This order for Affirmation of Baptism is an expression of mutual commitment to one another in Christian community together. If you are wondering, considering, interested in joining the congregation and participating in this day, please contact Pastor Lyle, Pastor Lyndon or the Church office. All are welcome!
Fall Supper – Postponed for 2019
The Fall Supper in support of the Shelbourne Community
Kitchen will not take place this October to give those who have taken the lead for 13 years! and staff at the Kitchen a rest and to give opportunity for evaluation and others to join in the planning and preparation. We will designate Sunday, October 20, a special Sunday for donations for the Kitchen. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Lyndon, Pastor Lyle or the church office.
The Karren Stinson Bursary Committee wishes to remind those interested  that applications for the bursary can be obtained from the church office or from our website.  Applications are due October 31st.  The bursary gives financial assistance to Christians of the Lutheran or Anglican faiths involved in post secondary education leading to a vocation of service  (teacher, social worker, nurse, ministry, etc.).  The amount of the bursary varies each year due to interest rates during the year.  The successful candidate can be assured of at least five hundred dollars.
Blessings, Bursary Committee
Listening. Learning. Understanding. Reconciliation. Truth. Healing.

These are familiar words in our faith life. They are also core words to the building of our relationship with Aboriginal neighbors in the surrounding community.
The Church of the Cross Truth and Reconciliation team invites you to listen, learn and seek understanding as part of establishing a better relationship with First Nations peoples.  Here are three resources to help in our reconciliation journey:

A good summary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Work can be viewed at this web link:
 https://ravenreads.org/blogs/news/truth-and-reconciliation-commission-work-summary

A good resource for the listening, learning and understanding journey is this edition of Visions Journal which addresses some of the issues at the heart of the Truth and Reconciliation Report:
https://www.heretohelp.bc.ca/visions/indigenous-people-vol11

An interesting podcast for gaining a better understanding of Aboriginal issues in North American society.  Here is the link:

You are invited to join the continuing conversation on Truth and Reconciliation on
Tuesday, October 8, 1:30 pm at Church of the Cross.
During this season of the Time of Creation, let us consider this:

The UN adopted the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons on July 7, 2017.  Nuclear Weapons states and NATO members, including
Canada, have not signed.  Yet.
 Read the full treaty here:

www.icanw.org/treaty-on-the-prohibition-of-nuclear-weapons.

The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, and World Beyond War Victoria, working together with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (*ICAN) has organized a “Sign On” campaign, inviting Canadian citizens across our beautiful country to show their support for this treaty and the prohibition of nuclear weapons.

We will have the Sign On petition available at the entrance to our church on September 15 and 22.  If you are in agreement with to the treaty, we invite you to add your signature.  The Sign On sheets will be taken to Ottawa on September 26 to show our government that country wide, Canadians support this prohibition.
Thank you for your support.
Barbara McDavid and the Social Justice Committee

*ICAN is a coalition of over 433 peace and disarmament groups and won the Nobel Peace Prize on October 6, 2017 for their work in bringing about the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons at the UN.
Community Action Week - Climate Action Month
This week, KAIROS Climate Action
Month will focus on community action. September 20 marks the beginning of the Week for Future, an international movement driven by local level activism to hold world leaders accountable for the climate emergency. The systemic changes needed to
adequately address climate change cannot be made without our community collaboration. We all need to reach out to our political representatives and demand sustainable solutions. Learn More!

Stitch and Chat Meetings - Stitch and Chat will not meet on September 24th as scheduled in the calendar. Our first meeting of the fall will be on October 1st in the rotunda at 1:00 pm. Bring your finished summer projects if you have any and things you are working on for the fall. For more information please contact Janice Nelson or the church office.
Are you interested in some of my fabric stash?  These are not quilting cottons. These are fabrics purchased for the purpose of sewing skirts, suits, and such things.  Fiber content is  wool, polyesters and blends. If you know anyone, that might be interested I would be happy to let go of these fabrics.  Yes, it does tug at my creative heart-strings, but I prefer to see them used by someone, rather than my storing for another 20 years.
