Holy Cross Sunday – Season of Creation, September 12, 2021 – 10 AM

In this Season of Creation, we celebrate and give thanks this Sunday for the Holy Cross that holds the revelation of God’s grace given for all the world in Christ Jesus. We also celebrate the dedication of the new building addition 14 years ago and the support of our worship and ministry and community this space provides. This Sunday, we will also celebrate the Installation of Nathan McDonald as the new Kantor of Church of the Cross. And we celebrate the continuing ministry of Church of the Cross and the leadership and service of everyone in this community. So much to celebrate and give thanks for! You are invited to wear red and join in-person or online.
Mortgage Reduction Update

This Sunday marks the 14th anniversary of the dedication of the building addition, including the sanctuary. Here we have gathered to worship, celebrate, grieve, learn and engage with the community around us.

As we return to in-person worship this coming Sunday, we are invited to make a special offering to reduce the mortgage on our building.

To date we have been able to pay down more than two-thirds of the original mortgage amount – an achievement that, in no small part, is due to our special donations.

The principal now owing is about three hundred and eighty thousand dollars ($380,000). At the current rate of repayment, we estimate that the mortgage will be paid-off in about 10 years.

If we continue to make additional annual lump-sum payments from special donations, we can move up the date of a mortgage-burning party. Just think of what more we could do once the mortgage is fully paid.

As we prepare for worship in-person as well as via live stream, prayerfully consider a donation to reducing our mortgage.  Any amount of gift matters and is appreciated! Thank you for your ongoing support of the congregation.

Acts of Creation and Greening News

Since the beginning of July, the Greening Committee has been exploring how members of our faith community live out their lives with their acts of creation. The video series, which ends next week, has recorded 10 individuals with the video recording cached on the LCC YouTube page. For the second week of the Season of Creation, Sept 9, 2021, tune in to hear Sue Schaffer talking about how she reduces her carbon footprint, with the link found
here.

In this Season of Creation, we continue to pray that the breath of God’s creative word would move our hearts, give us faith, and enlighten us with grace to respond to God’s covenant to care for our common world, and that the Holy Spirit renew the face of the Earth, and safeguard a home for all.

In Christ,

Choral Scholar Position (tenor/bass) for Singers and Instrumentalists

Position description
The Board of Worship of Lutheran Church of the Cross is seeking a Choral Scholar for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Choral Scholars play a valuable role in the musical life of the church. Choral Scholars will assist the Kantor by providing vocal leadership for the congregation and church choir through solo and ensemble singing. Instrumentalists will be encouraged to use their primary instrument (e.g., strings/winds/keyboard) as an additional means to enhance worship music. Both singers and instrumentalists, with vocal experience, are encouraged to apply.

Requirements
Applicants should be an experienced singer or instrumentalist studying at a post-secondary institution. Strong sight-reading skills and experience in liturgical music is an asset.

The position includes participating in weekly worship and choir rehearsals, providing support for the choir and serving as a soloist as required.

Choral Scholars will be expected to attend worship on Sundays, from 9am-11:30am, and other festival and occasional services.

The stipend is $250 per month and start ASAP, concluding April 30, 2022, with the possibility of extending through the summer and renewal for a following year.

Canada has a new national holiday on September 30th known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Save the Date for Julius Maslovat,  October 5th

The Social Justice Committee and Church of the Cross invite you to save the date of Tuesday October 5th at 7 pm to meet Julius Maslovat, the first speaker in the 2021/22 series on anti-racism.

Julius Maslovat was 2 1/2 years old when he became the youngest prisoner in Germany's Buchenwald concentration camp. Both of his parents were killed in the Holocaust. Maslovat says. “I survived because of other people, people who were concerned enough, despite their own condition, to help someone else.”

Julius tells his story in a powerful documentary Why am I here? The documentary summarizes Maslovat’s journey to discover his own past and to learn about the people who kept him alive. The purpose of the film moves beyond documenting a tragic event into encouraging viewers to learn about injustices in our current world as the audience is encouraged to ask themselves the question 'Why am I here'?

Faithful Election Conversation
On September 1 Martin Luther University’s Centre for Public Ethics, the Baha’i Community of Canada, Citizens for Public Justice and Centre Oblat – A Voice for Justice, hosted A Faithful Election Conversation 2021.  The event was a thoughtful exchange between representatives of Canada’s four major parties on several key issues of particular interest to Canada’s faith communities – Indigenous Reconciliation, Climate Justice, Poverty, and Xenophobia, including racial and religious intolerance.

As we mentioned during the event, our goals were to elevate our political discourse, focus the conversation on issues of public concern, and create a resource for citizens to use over the coming days as they engage in deliberation about the upcoming vote. A link to the event is here:
