Reconciling the Earth & the Time of Creation
Reconciliation is an important theme and action for our world, for our earth, our national church body and, for our lives. Introducing the idea of reconciling the earth is something I want to address in this article as preparation for the upcoming Time of Creation. But what does it mean to reconcile the earth? According to Rev. Kenn Ward, editor of the ELCIC Canada Lutheran Magazine, reconciling is about “reconnecting people or things in ways that they were meant to be.”
Much of the August issue of the magazine discussed the theme of reconciliation and actions taken by the Synod in the 2019 ELCIC National Convention, as an invitation to “journey together” toward healing. If you haven’t already read the issue, take another look. Each contributor explores how we as individuals and faith communities can adopt practices to address the issues of the dying, reimaging our church, working with our indigenous neighbors, promoting respect for LGBTQ2SIA+ and, becoming a Greening Faith Community.
As I write this article, August is almost over, and the fall looms, as we return from vacations to our regular schedules. In September, Lutheran Church of the Cross celebrates the Time of Creation to help focus on the Creator and Creation in worship and our actions.
The Social Justice Committee has created a calendar for September with daily suggestions for prayer, being in the Word, praise, and Green activities. It’s our hope this simple tool offers ways to address the problems threatening our earths. You will have the opportunity to learn more with articles by Social Justice committee members during the month, that provide other ideas such as video links, books or on-line resources to spotlight our ailing earth. Check out the website for the Earth Charter, which is an ethical framework for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21 centuries. See: www.earthcharter.org/discover/
On another note, the SJC continues to collect donations for our November Jewelry and Tea fund raiser. There’s a marked file box in the back of the narthex for clothing or other bulky items but jewelry can be left in the mailboxes of Sherry Coughlin, Susanne Standeven, or Susan Beiderwieden.
Blessings, S. Beiderwieden

Celebrate Holy Cross Sunday with a Mortgage Reduction Donation
On September 15, 2019 we will celebrate the 12th anniversary of the dedication of our beautiful worship space and a $1.1M mortgage. During these 12 years the mortgage principal has been reduced to $470,000.00. Celebration of this anniversary provides an opportunity for each of us to make a donation to reduce the mortgage principal. The current rate of interest is 3.8%. Reducing the principal with our annual donations can significantly reduce the annual interest paid.
Mark your envelope “Mortgage principal reduction” or “Mortgage Reduction”.

STEAM is a new program offered this fall.
STEAM =
Science Technology Engineering Arts Math.
STEAM After School program will meet weekly on Tuesdays, beginning Tues., Sept. 17, 2019, 3:30 to 5:00 PM, at Lutheran Church of the Cross. We will meet for eight weeks, until Nov. 5, and will gauge interest whether to continue into November.
There will be another STEAM after school program beginning mid-January 2020.
This will be for kids age: 10 to 17 primarily but we can make exceptions.
We will begin in September with an introduction to HTML programming. In this course kids will learn the basics about creating their own simple web-site using code. The first three sessions will focus on lessons on coding and subsequent sessions will focus on making web-sites with the assistance of the teacher and helpers. If possible kids should bring a laptop of any kind or Windows based tablet with them. If there is either a USB port or dongle with USB port on the computer this would be helpful. TJ Silver, with Church of the Cross, will be leading this course. He has an IT background including game development. He has personally designed a curriculum for this purpose, including a teacher’s manual for adults who would like to help or if one of us needs to fill in for a given day.
TJ has been talking with families interested in the STEAM program. Some have asked about the possibility of an evening time as well. As a result TJ is offering the same STEAM program at an evening time on a trial basis this fall to gauge interest. It could be that the evening time works better for some families, including older teens. Here are the details for that:
STEAM Evening program will be on Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:00 PM beginning
Thursday, September 26, at Lutheran Church of the Cross. This will also run for eight weeks. This will include the same introduction to HTML programming as the after school class. Part of the idea of multiple offerings is reaching out to families including beyond our churches. Evening times may work better for some families, including older teens. After the end of this trial run we can see whether this is something we will continue in the winter or whether the two groups merge to a shared time for example.
We thank TJ for generously designing and teaching this course.
If you have any questions please speak to TJ Silver, Pastor Lyndon or Pastor Lyle.

Please join us on Saturday September 7th at 10am at St. George’s Cadboro Bay for a very special Coffee and Conversation session where we will have the public launch of the video "A Typical Heart".
It is a short but unforgettably powerful documentary about women's #1 killer, heart disease, which kills more women than all cancers and respiratory diseases combined! A panel discussion will follow with renowned women's heart advocate and speaker Carolyn Thomas, as well as other Vancouver Island heart patients seen in the video, Laurie Blakely and Zamira Vicenzino. The event is free and all are welcome, but registration is required as seating is limited. Refreshments will be served. As Carolyn is a very sought-after speaker, please register early to ensure your seat.
