Thanksgiving food collection for Shelbourne Community Kitchen

With Grateful Hearts…
The Board of Worship and the Social Justice Committee are thrilled to show our support for Shelbourne Community Kitchen again this Thanksgiving!

With grateful hearts, for all that we have, we are gathering gifts of food and donations on Thanksgiving Sunday, October 9th. Non-perishable food goods may be brought in advance and be dropped off at church during office hours and placed in the basket or brought to worship on Sunday, October 9. All items will be placed around the table before worship and be blessed before being taken downstairs to the Kitchen. Or if you wish to offer a financial donation, please designate the amount and “Shelbourne Community Kitchen” on the subject line of your offering envelope, on an e-transfer, or in the drop down box for on-line giving on our website.

Thank you for your care and support of the Shelbourne Community Kitchen!

Interview on Reconciliation with Carolyn Klaassen

We are thankful Carolyn Klaassen, Indigenous church leader and Lutheran candidate for ministry, once again led us in worship on Orange Shirt Sunday.
Here is an interview Carolyn recently did with Ken Shigematsu of Tenth Church West Side in Vancouver. Another opportunity for us to learn from her generous teaching and sharing gifts with the wider church.

Pictures from Orange Shirt Day
& National Day for Truth & Reconciliation in Victoria

Story & Photos: Craig Knight

Last Friday Canadians observed National Orange Shirt along with Truth and Reconciliation Day. Ceremonies honoured survivors of residential schools.  Children who are buried at those schools were remembered. I and several others from Church of the Cross attended ceremonies at Victoria City Hall. We heard traditional Indigenous drummers and singers. We listened to words of suffering and healing.  We heard the hopeful songs of pre-school children. We were challenged by Eddy Charlie who attended the Kuper Island residential school. My soul was touched by all I saw and heard. We remember that the suffering and death experienced at residential schools is a living history for many Indigenous people and a source of intergenerational trauma. The Powwow which followed at Royal Athletic Park was a memorable event. Thousands of people from around the capital region attended. The work of reconciliation continues for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike.

New Vision and Priorities - Save the Date!
Saturday, October 15, 2022  9:00 AM – 12:30 PM

What will Lutheran Church of the Cross be doing in 2023? 2024? 2025? What do you want it to look like? What will our priorities be?

You are invited to join the Church Council on October 15th at 9:00 to help us reset the church’s Vision and Priorities for the next three years! We want and need your input and your ideas to shape our future! Craig Knight will serve as our facilitator for the process. Please come for a morning of community building, thinking and discussion - followed by a delicious free lunch.

Our first session on October 15 will include:
  • Short Worship and Communion together
  • Results from our 2020 – 2022 Priorities
  • Mutual Ministry Survey Results – Key Takeaways and Discussion
  • Brainstorming Session
    • Who are we as a people of God and as a church?
    • What is important to us?
    • What might be different over the next three years?
  • Lunch
Our last session will be held before the end of November and will include:
  • Review / Summary of Brainstorming results
  • Setting Vision categories
  • Creating Priorities for each Vision category
Next week, you will receive an email with preparation material that will be helpful to review before the session. Please consider attending this important event in the life of our church.
Thank you to organizers for the Sustainable Clothing Show and Tell

Thanks to all who attended and shared stories about beloved articles of clothing. Thanks to keynote speakers from Beacon Community Services, Vintage Fashion Showcase, and UVic. Thanks also to organizers from Care for the Earth, Board of Education, and Women in Faith. Thanks to Karl for serving as MC and all those who contributed to the lunch and hospitality.

Here are some photos from this wonderful event that brought people together over food, story, and caring for God’s creation.

Weekly Devotions from Diaconal Intern Denise

As I dive deeper and deeper into my internship with the Lutheran Theological Seminary, exciting things emerge. One of them is this project:  Stories of Faith - The Devotional Edition. I am releasing a short podcast weekly, based on my reflection on one of the lectionary readings. I hope you enjoy these 10 minute devotionals.

Welcoming those Who Are New – Sunday, November 6, 10 AM Worship

The pandemic has limited our opportunities to welcome those who are new to the community of Church of the Cross. And so, we look forward to worship on Sunday, November 6, and sharing in Affirmation of Baptism and welcoming and blessing of those who are new. If you are new to the community and would like to be included or have questions about this day of welcome, please speak with Pastor Lyle or Pastor Lyndon or contact the church office.
Burgers and Beers for a Refugee Family with Congregation Emanu-El - October 15, 2022, 8:00pm at The Canadian Brewhouse, #117, 3500 Uptown Boulevard, $25 per person. Register at dr.mcdonalddvm@gmail.com

The Syrian Refugee Family project – a joint effort of members of Congregation Emanu-El and the Lutheran Church of the Cross to sponsor a Syrian refugee family in their move to Victoria – invite you to join us for a fun evening of food, drink, bowling, and exciting silent auction items at The Canadian Brewhouse on Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Your $25 ticket to this event gets you your choice of a beef, chicken, or veggie burger and your first beer of the evening. There will be bowling lanes available as well as a roof-top batting cage if the weather is cooperative into October. Throughout the night there will be the opportunity to bid on the wide variety of lovely silent auction items.

Our sponsorship team is working through the Intercultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) to sponsor this family of six Syrian refugees to start their life anew in Victoria, and while we have met the minimum requirements set by the federal government to move forward with the sponsorship, we still need to raise more funds to support the family during their first year transitioning to life in Canada.

It would be our great pleasure to spend the evening with you, however if you are unable to attend the event but still wish to contribute, we are looking for more items for the silent auction (tax receipts are available for donated items), or you can contribute directly to the refugee fund through Church of the Cross.

All funds raised will go towards refugee sponsorship, in collaboration with the ICA. If you would like to attend the event or have an item to donate to the silent auction, please contact Kaitlin at
dr.mcdonalddvm@gmail.com. If you require further information, you may contact the church office.
Adult Praying Friends

Each year at Church of the Cross members of the church are invited to participate as Adult Praying Friends. It’s an opportunity for an adult praying friend to pray for a designated child(ren) and youth during the school year. Prayer is a wonderful gift we can offer to let the younger people in our church know they are an important part of our church and are treasured and cherished. Participants are also invited to join a couple of social events organized together with families.

Praying Adult Friends might send their designated young person seasonal and birthday cards; however, they are asked to forgo material gifts. Praying for others builds one another up in faith, increases social bonds within the body of Christ, and is one way we live out Jesus’ call to love our neighbour.

Contact Susanne at standeven3525@gmail.com to participate or for more information.
Sunday Offering Counters

With the return to normal Sunday service we will resume the practice of having congregation members count the Sunday offering directly after service, starting on Sunday, October 16th.

This valuable service is done in teams of two and usually takes between a half hour to an hour.  Prior to the pandemic we had 6 teams of 2 with a rotation of every month and a half. If you have counted in the past or would like start to volunteer please contact the Financial Secretary, Barry Walker at:
bhwalker@shaw.ca or by phone at 250-381-1698, 250-818-7931.
