Vision and Priorities for Church of the Cross
Thank you to the 25 people who were able to join in the
meeting on Saturday, September 27, about the vision and ministry priorities for Church of the Cross for the next three to five years. A list of 10 possible priorities was considered which are posted on the walls in the upper hall. To give more people the opportunity to participate, an online survey is being developed as well as a paper resource. If you have any comments or suggestions please be in contact with a member of Council, Pastor Lyndon, Pastor Lyle or the church office.
And please pray for God’s Spirit to guide us in the directions of this ministry together.
Earth Loom
Thank you to Lynn Jones for preparing the Earth Loom for the Time of Creation
again this year. If you have not tried weaving some of the materials in the basket into the loom, you are invited to do so today or add to weaving you have already done. The weaving will be placed outside after this Sunday to return to the earth. We continue to pray and work for greater care of this planet for the good of all God’s creation.
Gathering Food for Thanksgiving Sunday
Donations of perishable and non-perishable
food for the Shelbourne Community Kitchen will be received as part of worship on Thanksgiving Sunday, October 13 at 10 AM. Items may be added to the display of food around the Communion table before worship or during the gathering of the offering. Thank you for your generous support.
Welcoming those who are new in October
Two or three times a year Church of the Cross
welcomes those who are new and others who have decided to become members of the congregation. Planning is underway for this to take place October 20th. This order for Affirmation of Baptism is an expression of mutual commitment to one another in Christian community together. If you are wondering, considering, interested in joining the congregation and participating in this day, please contact Pastor Lyle, Pastor Lyndon or the Church office. All are welcome!
In your mailboxes you will find a individual giving summary as of 15 September 2019. If you made a pledge for 2019 that has also been included for your information. If you have any questions or notice any discrepancies please contact the Financial Secretary, Barry Walker at 250-381-1698, bhwalker@shaw.ca or contact Deb in the church office.
Your continuing support and generous gifts to the church are greatly appreciated.
VERA Awards - Iris Schoffer recipient
(excerpt from Times colonist, Healthy Living, Sat. Sept. 28, 2019)
‘Each year, in
celebration of International Day of Older Persons, the Eldercare Foundation and the University of Victoria’s Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health co-host the annual Valued Elder Recognition Awards (VERA).
VERA honours individuals who, over their lifetime, have given exemplary service through volunteerism. ‘ This year, eight amazing volunteers were recognized for their lifetime of contributions to the community.  One of whom was our very own Iris Schoffer. Iris ‘shared her belief that “there is always a way to help out, no matter what constraints age may place upon a person.”
Congratulations and Thank You, Iris!

Fall Supper – Postponed for 2019

Kitchen will not take place this October to give those who have taken the lead for 13 years! and staff at the Kitchen a rest and to give opportunity for evaluation and others to join in the planning and preparation. We will designate Sunday, October 20, a special Sunday for donations for the Kitchen. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Lyndon, Pastor Lyle or the church office.
The Karren Stinson Bursary Committee wishes to remind those interested  that applications for the bursary may be obtained from the church office or from our website.  Applications are due October 31st.  The bursary gives financial assistance to Christians of Lutheran or Anglican traditions involved in post secondary education leading to a vocation of service  (teacher, social worker, nurse, ministry, etc.).  The amount of the bursary varies each year due to interest rates during the year.  The successful candidate can be assured of at least five hundred dollars.
Blessings, Bursary Committee
