Save the Date: Anti-Racism Talk in-person event
Monday, October 24, 7 PM, Church of the Cross

Speaker: Florentien Verhage, Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria
Topic: Bystander Awareness - What to do when you experience or witness a racist incident

Parking: As there are two events in the church that evening overflow parking is available at St. Luke's, 3821 Cedar Hill Road

The Social Justice Committee and Church of the Cross, Victoria BC invite you to attend an in-person event which will be the fourth and final event in the anti-racism series.

We began these dialogues with a desire to increase our awareness about how racism exists in today's society in unexpected and expected ways. We have learned more about how racism impacts the life choices available to individuals and how we as individuals can enact change and build supportive relationships in the future.

To end the series in this learning journey, Florentien Verhage, a representative from the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA), will speak on the topic: Bystander Awareness – What to do when you experience or witness a racist incident.

Florentien holds a Ph. D in Philosophy from McGill University, 2009, an M.A. In Philosophy of Cognitive Science, from the University of Sussex, 2001 and a B.A./M.A. in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, from the University of Maastricht, 1999.

In 2008, Florentien was an Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy and a core faculty member in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at W&L a university in Lexington, Virginia.

She now works as an Immigrant Integration Research & Planning Manager at the Inter-Cultural Association in Victoria BC

Florentien helped coordinate the partnership between the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria, and other sector partners, who conducted a survey then in May 2021, released the Community Report on Racism in Greater Victoria. Click here to read the report
