Around the Table with Inclusive Christians at UVic

Many thanks to the Church of the Cross community for continuing to support campus ministry including Around the Table. This is a weekly worship gathering for students hosted by Inclusive Christians at UVic, followed by a communal meal. We have several soup makers in the congregation who contribute a pot of soup and sometimes bread on days Church of the Cross is providing the meal. If you know a student or member of the campus community who may be interested, Around the Table takes place on Wednesdays that classes are meeting, 5 PM at the Multifaith Centre, UVic. We have been having consistently good turnout to Inclusive Christian events, in part through the addition of student leaders including Boston and Courtenay. This year we are also supporting two campus ministry interns who are completing MDiv studies at Vancouver School of Theology. One of them is Leslie Flynn who many of you have met through her previous work with St. Luke’s, St. George’s, and Day Camp. The other is Rebecca Yeo who has helped behind the scenes with Day Camp and has a background in arts and creative projects. Pr. Lyndon is serving as the supervisor this year for Rebecca Yeo. Both interns are gaining experience crafting and leading liturgies in campus ministry environments, as well as helping with other programming and communications. If you would be interested in helping make soup or baking bread contact either Pr. Lyndon or Pr. Lyle for more information on how to participate.

The Making of the Witness Blanket

Inspired by a woven blanket, this large‐scale art installation is made from hundreds of items reclaimed from residential schools, churches, government buildings and traditional and cultural structures across Canada.

The process of gathering these objects and their stories took Saanich Indigenous artist Carey Newman and his team from coast to coast to coast. They travelled over 200,000 kilometres, visited 77 communities, met over 10,000 people, and welcomed over a thousand objects into their care.

Each object has a story to tell, each survivor has something to say. The 90‐minute feature documentary film Picking Up the Pieces: The Making of the Witness Blanket weaves those stories with Carey Newman’s personal journey, examining how art can open our hearts to the pain of truth and the beauty of resilience. Here is the link to the documentary:

This film shares traumatic stories of Indian residential school survivors. Please watch and share with gentleness. If you or your family members have a history with residential schools, make sure before watching that you can connect with support.

Weekly Devotions from Diaconal Intern Denise

As I dive deeper and deeper into my internship with the Lutheran Theological Seminary, exciting things emerge. One of them is this project:  Stories of Faith - The Devotional Edition. I am releasing a short podcast weekly, based on my reflection on one of the lectionary readings. I hope you enjoy these 10 minute devotionals.

Please find my latest devotion.

Welcoming those Who Are New – Sunday, November 6, 10 AM Worship

The pandemic has limited our opportunities to welcome those who are new to the community of Church of the Cross. And so, we look forward to worship on Sunday, November 6, and sharing in Affirmation of Baptism and welcoming and blessing of those who are new. If you are new to the community and would like to be included or have questions about this day of welcome, please speak with Pastor Lyle or Pastor Lyndon or contact the church office.

Standing Up Against Violence
An Indigenous-Led Discussion
Tuesday, October 25, 2022
7:00 - 8:30 pm at St. Luke Cedar Hill

The Cornerstone Speaker Series presents Issues of Violence Against Women and Children.

The topic of this session on Tuesday, October 25th, will be Standing Up Against Violence: An Indigenous-Led Discussion. The presenter will be Kathryn Lacerte of the Moose Hide Campaign.

The Moose Hide Campaign is a grassroots movement to incite ongoing commitments and actions of Indigenous and non-Indigenous men and boys to stand up against violence towards women and children.  Inspired by the land, the love between a father and his daughter, and the national crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, the Moose Hide Campaign creates awareness and public engagement for transformation and healing.

The session starts at 7 pm and will include time for audience discussion and questions.

Burgers and Beers for a Refugee Family with Congregation Emanu-El - October 15, 2022, 8:00pm at The Canadian Brewhouse, #117, 3500 Uptown Boulevard, $25 per person. Register at dr.mcdonalddvm@gmail.com

The Syrian Refugee Family project – a joint effort of members of Congregation Emanu-El and the Lutheran Church of the Cross to sponsor a Syrian refugee family in their move to Victoria – invite you to join us for a fun evening of food, drink, bowling, and exciting silent auction items at The Canadian Brewhouse on Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Your $25 ticket to this event gets you your choice of a beef, chicken, or veggie burger and your first beer of the evening. There will be bowling lanes available as well as a roof-top batting cage if the weather is cooperative into October. Throughout the night there will be the opportunity to bid on the wide variety of lovely silent auction items.

Our sponsorship team is working through the Intercultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) to sponsor this family of six Syrian refugees to start their life anew in Victoria, and while we have met the minimum requirements set by the federal government to move forward with the sponsorship, we still need to raise more funds to support the family during their first year transitioning to life in Canada.

It would be our great pleasure to spend the evening with you, however if you are unable to attend the event but still wish to contribute, we are looking for more items for the silent auction (tax receipts are available for donated items), or you can contribute directly to the refugee fund through Church of the Cross.

All funds raised will go towards refugee sponsorship, in collaboration with the ICA. If you would like to attend the event or have an item to donate to the silent auction, please contact Kaitlin at
dr.mcdonalddvm@gmail.com. If you require further information, you may contact the church office.
