Message from Brian Wismath

It is with both excitement and sadness that I will be leaving my position at Lutheran Church of the Cross at the end of August. Since the Fall of 2013 it has been my pleasure to serve the church as cantor, working closely with the choir weekly and being part of the worship committee. The past year has given me time to reflect on my future and while Victoria is certainly the paradise of Canada, my partner and I have decided to move to Stratford, Ontario where we will be closer to our families. This will also provide me with an opportunity to pursue work outside of the performing arts and non-profit sectors which I've been dedicated to for many years. I am looking forward to a change but will very much miss the church. Being a part of the church has become an important part of my life and I am grateful to everyone for helping me feel welcomed, especially the members of the choir whom I will miss dearly. I will also miss working closely with Lyle and Lyndon, whose meaningful and inspiring leadership I've appreciated very much. I look forward to following the church online and to in person visits in the future!

Thanks,
Brian
Annual Spring Cleanup - May 17 to May 24

Thank you to everyone who signed up for Spring cleaning tasks and look forward to many more interested volunteers on May 15. There is an abundance of cleaning supplies that can be used, however pails, rubber gloves, brooms, spongers and rags are in short supply. Please bring your own tools as you wish. Those who want to work outside are welcome to bring, clippers, rakes, and pruning tools to help tackle some of the winter over growth. Coffee break will be supplied by Marg, Paula and Gail. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you after a long time away. COVID Committee rules of face masks, and distancing while inside and out will apply. Contact the Church Office to book your favorite task, date and time of attendance.

Antiracism = Attitude
let’s talk some more…

The Social Justice Committee has asked that we think on “antiracism” – as individuals, as part of our larger community, and as a faith community.  This means first taking a close look at ourselves.

We are urged to ask ourselves these hard questions this week:

*What is my attitude towards others who differ from myself – by skin color, by ethnicity, by gender identity, by faith difference?

*How was this attitude – negative or positive - formed?  Through family experiences?  Through a personal experience?  Is this attitude a “product of the time”?

*Is this the attitude I want to pass to my children?  My grandchildren?  To those around me?

Let’s continue to work towards being part of the solution!

COVID-19 Emergency Appeal for India

India's total number of COVID-19 cases has dramatically risen to over 20 million as of May 2, with more than 300,000 cases reported for 10 straight days and with no immediate signs of slowing down - and medical experts believe that the numbers are even higher with many cases not reported from rural areas. The reported national fatality rate is at 1.11%, with an acute shortage of medical supplies including oxygen. Hospitals and crematoriums alike are overwhelmed, and hotels and railway coaches are being converted into critical care facilities to make up for the shortage of hospital beds.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada's partner Canadian Lutheran World Relief is accepting donations to assist with this crisis. Donations will provide emergency medical support to those faced to be sick at home, and help support critical advocacy and public awareness efforts to keep as many people safe as possible.

Individuals and congregations wishing to support relief efforts can donate as follows:
  • Make a designated offering donation for "India Covid Crisis" through any ELCIC congregation.
  • Send a cheque made payable to CLWR and mailed to CLWR, 600-177 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5. Please indicate that you wish to contribute to "India Covid Crisis."
  • Call CLWR at 1-800-661-2597 (locally at 204-694-6502) to donate by credit card or go online at: clwr.org/india
Mental Health Week: Name It, Don't Numb It (May 3 to 9)

Every May, people in Canadian communities, schools, workplaces and legislatures rally around Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) Mental Health Week. The theme of this year's Mental Health Week is understanding our emotions, which runs from May 3-9.

Recognizing, labeling and accepting our feelings are all part of protecting and promoting good mental health for everyone. Regardless of whether or not we have a mental illness, our mental health is something we can protect and nurture. For information, helpful articles, and free downloadable communications tools to help you celebrate CMHA Mental Health Week, please visit

Plant Sale for Shelbourne Community Kitchen

Thank you to everyone who has been donating plants for the Spring Plant Sale!!!

We will be having an informal Covid-Style Garden Sale at the end of my driveway at 3597 Thistle St. like we did in 2020 when our Annual St Aidan’s Garden Sale was cancelled.  Last spring we made over $3500 for the Shelbourne Community Kitchen in the two months between May 1st and July 1st and we did it together from
this little plant stand!

What is needed to set up the Garden Stand is:
•            perennials from your gardens
•            seedlings that you have started
•            plastic pots, ceramic pots, useable tools and fun garden art.

So go wild like you did in 2020 and let’s donate even more $$$ to the Shelbourne Community Kitchen in 2021!  The stand will open May 1st so please have some garden donations to me by then and then just keep the stuff coming until the end of June and together we will support the good work of the Shelbourne Community Kitchen. Call the number below to arrange for pick-up of your donations.  Covid protocols will be adhered to.

Thanks, Vivian Skinner

Call for Small-Scale Climate Justice Projects

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has issued a call for small-scale climate justice projects initiated and led by young people. "For LWF, climate justice points to the need for everybody to take responsibility for the care of creation. We see it as a matter of intergenerational justice." says Eva Christina Nilsson, Director of LWF's Department for Theology, Mission and Justice, announcing the new call for proposals.

The deadline for proposals is on May 16. Each project should be initiated and led by young people, aged 30 years or younger, and require endorsement by an LWF member church. Projects should run from July to October. Applications meeting the eligibility criteria must be sent to
action.justice@lutheranworld.org under the subject “Youth Climate Project"
