Join the Church of the Cross community for online worship as we celebrate this festival of the Holy Spirit, rejoicing in God’s Spirit everywhere. As in the past, you may want to wear something red for this Sunday! If you do, send the church a picture that we can post online of worshipping together.
Also this Sunday, we invite everyone to a Zoom “coffee time” following worship. A Zoom invitation will be sent out on Mailchimp. Simply join the group following worship, about 11:15 AM PDT. It is a chance to see and visit with others as part of our worshipping together.

Online Ecumenical Pentecost Prayer Service
Amid the unique challenges and opportunities of this year’s COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian Council of Churches (CCC) is hosting an online ecumenical Pentecost prayer service that will allow us to “come together in one place” (Acts 2:1) in ecumenical friendship and prayer.
Leaders of CCC member churches from coast to coast to coast will gather with us as we look together to an uncertain yet hope-filled future.
Prayers, Scripture readings, and reflections will be offered in English and French.
Highlights of the service:
The Rev. Amanda Currie, Moderator of the 2019 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, and The Most Rev. Pierre Goudreault, Roman Catholic Bishop of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière, will offer brief homiletic reflections.
Other service leaders include:
The Rt. Rev. Richard Bott, Moderator of The United Church of Canada
The Rev. Susan C. Johnson, National Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada
The Rev. Stephen Kendall, President of The Canadian Council of Churches
The Most Rev. Linda Nicholls, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada
Pastor Peter Noteboom, General Secretary of The Canadian Council of Churches
Commissioner Floyd J. Tidd, Territorial Commander of The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda
The Rev. Archpriest Fr. Zareh Zargarian, Vicar, Armenian Holy Apostolic Church, Canadian Diocese

Dessert and Dialogues on Holy Communion
Thank you to those who were able to participate in our conversations on May 7 and May 26 about Holy Communion in this time of social distancing and worshipping online together. The discussions were very helpful in hearing one another and strong support for offering Holy Communion as part of our online worship. As pastors, we will be talking to the Board of Worship about how and when to begin. It will include celebrating Holy Communion with those physically present for worship, and the option for those joining the livestream to share bread and wine where they are. We recognize this is something very new for most of us. We have researched and discussed various perspectives on the faithfulness of this practise to what we believe as Lutherans about Holy Communion. That Christ is truly present in the sacrament of bread and wine and the community gathered remains our belief together. We recognize this as an opportunity to try this as a trial during this extraordinary time and we will evaluate this practise together. There is a strong desire and sense of listening for the guiding of God’s Spirit among us, especially in our discussing and coming to a decision together. The Council has expressed its support for this trial practise, and we encourage anyone who has further comments, concerns or questions to please be in contact with us as pastors, or with members of the Board of Worship or Council. We pray that God continue to bless us as we seek to worship and live faithfully in this and at all times in the Spirit of the risen Christ Jesus.

COVID-19 Update
Church Council met via Zoom on May 27 and discussed future planning as church during the pandemic. There was a consensus from everyone not wanting to rush ahead with reopening, despite the easing of restrictions around public gatherings from the province. The go-slow approach was affirmed by a large number of people voicing their concern during the phone check-ins organized by Board of Communities of Care, asking that we not re-open too soon.
In the meantime Board of Worship is forming a working group, consulting with healthcare professionals in our midst, as we look towards future planning. At this point we are not in a position to start naming dates around reopening, but are beginning planning around best practices when we feel it is safe enough to do so and what that would look like.
Thank you to everyone for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us via e-mail, over the phone, and Zoom discussions.
