 ELCIC Praise Appeal Offering for National Church
Sunday, May 26, 2019
On Sunday, May 26th, your Praise Appeal contribution will help the National Church work in areas of homelessness, affordable housing, Canadian Lutheran World Relief, partnership with churches in Argentina and Peru, support the Call to Spiritual Renewal, and building better relationships with other denominations and faiths in Canada.
On May 26th, you may contribute using the Special Offering Envelopes in your Sunday bulletin, or, you may include Praise Appeal on your regular offering envelope. |

COUNTERS NEEDED FOR SUNDAY WORSHIP
We continue to need volunteers to help count the offering on Sundays. This usually takes less than one hour following Sunday service. Presently counting teams are asked to count once every 7-8 weeks, the more volunteers we have the less often the rotation comes around.

How do we walk the path of Reconciliation with Aboriginal people?
My personal journey of relations with Aboriginal people was similar to that of others: as a child we learned prejudices, we judged the dilapidated reserves as their own fault, we judged Aboriginal people who were drunk or homeless. But as an adult, I got to know individual Aboriginal nurses, parents, adopted children and built relationships. My eyes were opened by the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, including courageously shared stories revealing the truth of residential schools, the Document of Discovery and the Indian Act. A ray of hope began with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action and our own ELCIC declarations of commitment toward Reconciliation.
Lutherans may not have played a direct role in the residential school legacy. Nevertheless, we are guilty of our prejudices and judgements, and complicit when our governments have treated and continue to treat Indigenous peoples disrespectfully and without regard when big business is involved. Our governments continue to refuse Indigenous peoples true consultations and recognize treaties, but instead too often governments inform Indigenous peoples of an already formed decision.
We find ourselves asking questions including: Why are there a disproportionate number of Aboriginal people per capita in our justice system? Why are there more Aboriginal children in foster care? Why are there more cases of Aboriginal women murdered or missing many of which have not been resolved? Why are the reserves so small in BC compared with other parts of Canada? We need to look at the consequences of our colonialism, policies, and actions. It is up to us as individuals to learn the truth of the past, have compassion for the wrongs done to them, and understand how this can affect a people for generations in all aspects of life.
Our feelings of blamelessness or heavy guilt do not help in moving forward on the path toward Reconciliation. We need to learn and practice right relations with our Indigenous neighbors, many of whom are our brothers and sisters in Christ. We can support Aboriginal agencies/organizations that assist in the healing process. We can listen to the stories of First Nations peoples, stand up with them, show support for their actions toward healing, and speak out to our government and other people when we see injustices.

· Read books by Aboriginal authors or historians: Speaking Our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation by Monique Gray Smith; The Inconvenient Indian: a curious account of Native People by Thomas King; Buffalo Shout, Salmon Cry: conversations on creation, land, justice and life together, a compilation of stories by
Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples, edited by Steve Heinrichs.
· Attend various plays, watch movies, see art displays about or by Aboriginal artists
· Attend various talks by Aboriginal people offered frequently by churches and organizations
· Join “Fairfield Gonzales Reconciliation Circle” or “Aboriginal Neighbors”, volunteer at Native Friendship Center, Indigenous-led activities, and “Surrounded by Cedar” family services.
· Be involved with Church of the Cross’s upcoming activities
