The Social Justice Committee (SJC) would like to thank the Church of the Cross congregation for their ongoing donations in support of Refugee Sponsorship and the Shelbourne Community Kitchen. Because of your generous donations, the Shelbourne Community Kitchen continues to receive $800.00 each month which the kitchen uses to purchase food vouchers for families in need. Money donated for Refugee sponsorship has helped purchase items needed by Refugee's during their settlement periods when first arriving in Canada, or for dental or medical costs not covered by health insurance.

As we are unable to hold group functions for fundraising purposes your continued support for both of these projects Is encouraging and very much appreciated. Thanks be to God.

Submitted on behalf of the SJC members with grateful thanks,

COVID-19 Urgent Food Support Fund for the Shelbourne Community Kitchen

We know that having reliable access to fresh healthy food and people you can call for support can make a world of difference...especially right now. In the past three weeks alone, the Kitchen Pantry program received and filled over 250 requests for food support and they are registering new members every day. And while the team is now a fraction of its original size, they dedicate time every week to call the members who they know are especially vulnerable right now and don't have computers at home to check in. They offer service updates and tell them "Yes! We are still open and here to help in any way we can."

The Shelbourne Community Kitchen might be a small organization, but it has a great big heart. If you are able to do so - please make a donation to the Urgent Food Support Fund today so that the Kitchen can meet the increasing demand. Please see letter below for more information regarding the Kitchen's Urgent Food Support Fund.

Your donation can be made online or be mailed to Shelbourne Community Kitchen at
3541 Shelbourne Street, Victoria V8P 4G6.

Covid-19 Update
The following is a letter of recommendation from our BC Synod about the question of re-opening for worship. The recommendations were discussed with Synod lay leaders at a Zoom meeting on May 14 and rostered ministers of the Synod this past week. We will be discussing the recommendations at the Council meeting on May 27. The Board of Worship has also met to discuss the recommendations. A concern for caution and great care around possibilities of re-opening is shared among all of the groups. We will continue considering various questions and concerns for some time in the future.

We will continue to communicate and seek congregational input in future decisions. If you have comments or concerns, please contact the church office or congregational leadership.

We will continue with livestream worship and weekly prayers and programing, meetings and other opportunities to connect online, and stay in contact through regular phone calls to everyone in the congregation. If anyone is in need of additional support, please contact the church office. us as Pastors, or congregational leaders.

And thank you to everyone for your ongoing support.

Dessert and Dialogue on “Virtual” Holy Communion – Tuesday, May 26, 7 – 8:30 PM

On Tuesday, May 26, 7 – 8:30 PM PDT we will join in a second conversation about Holy Communion during this time when we cannot physically gather for worship. At the first meeting we considered four articles taking different perspectives. For this conversation, we will consider four questions about Holy Communion covering areas of theology, experience, practise and inclusion. The questions will be included in the Zoom invitation sent out by email. If you do not receive the email and would like to participate or have any comments or questions, please contact the church office or Pastor Lyndon or Pastor Lyle.
Save the date: Dessert & Dialogue: Indigenous Voices in the Time of COVID-19, hosted by Truth & Reconciliation. Tuesday, June 16, 7:00 to 8:15 PM. Stay tuned for details about this on-line discussion.
iPads - iPhones - Seniors and COVID-19

The Seniors’ iPad group began meeting at a Chatterton coffee shop and as the group grew it moved to the Church of the Cross in 2013.  The group first met weekly and then twice a month in the rotunda. During the COVID-19 “lock down” it meets weekly via ZOOM on Thursdays at 10-11 AM.  Participants learn iPad functions, laptop uses, applications (Apps), and share good humour and camaraderie.  The dozen plus participants have become good friends and despite the COVID-19 isolation, look forward to their weekly visits with one another.
Contact Gerry Saleski for more info if you want to join the conversation sometime to see if it’s for you. E-mail:

Admired: Portraits of Influential Women

There are so many women in our community who deserve our admiration - and Our Place invites you to join in this celebration.

An online gallery was created by renowned local artist Elfrida Schragen as a unique project to benefit Our Place Society during this time of crisis.

Money raised will support Our Place in helping some of Greater Victoria’s most vulnerable women struggling with poverty, mental or physical challenges, or homelessness. This includes, our Women in Progress project – a skills training program helping women secure employment and a brighter future.

And during the pandemic, financial donations will also support core facilities and cover staff costs as they continue filling roles previously held by volunteers (who have been asked to stay safe at home).

The current economic downturn has caused a reduction in our usual sources of revenue, but unfortunately our food and paramedic outreach and facilities costs remain the same! Your support today will truly make a difference!

How You Can Join in this Celebration of Women
Please visit the Online Gallery
www.ourplacesociety.com/events/admired and check out all Elfrida’s portraits and read each individual’s story. Then, please pay tribute to the portrait you most admire, by making an online donation to Our Place Society. Each portrait has a goal of $1,000. You can also contact Our Place for more information at 250-940-5064 or stevens@ourplacesociety.com
Flowers in Worship
People have appreciated seeing flowers in the online worship. If you would like to provide flowers in honour or memory of a person or occasion please contact the church office to sign-up. Arrangements will be made for dropping them off at the church prior to worship.
