Provincial and Regional restrictions have been updated as of March 10, 2022.

Here are the latest restrictions.

At Church of the Cross masks are recommended but not required. Choir members have been asked to wear masks and those singing are encouraged to as well.

In-Person Worship, Sunday, 10 AM PDT

Church Council continues to work to see that in-person worship is safer for everyone. We will adjust our plans as health orders change.

Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is the best protection for the health of yourself and others. We strongly encourage everyone who is eligible to be fully vaccinated.

We will continue to livestream worship each Sunday.

May 1, Third Sunday of Easter
Everyone planning to come to worship are asked to follow these requirements:
  • If you are not feeling well and experiencing any Covid-19 related symptoms or if you are not vaccinated, please stay home and participate in worship online.
  • You are encouraged but not required to wear a mask when entering the building and throughout worship.
  • Observe social distancing.
  • Sanitize or wash hands as needed.
  • You are welcome to sing and you are encouraged to wear a mask.
  • We will greet one another and share the peace at a distance.
  • Holy Communion will be served with bread and individual glasses of wine that are spaced in the trays. You may commune with bread or wine alone if you wish.
  • It is not required that people register for worship ahead of time or sign in as you arrive.
We will continue to make adjustments as needed and keep you informed of any changes. Your feedback on your experience with in-person worship is valued.  Please let any member of Church Council, Pastors, or the church office know of any questions, concerns or ideas for making in-person worship and Sunday School safer and meaningful for everyone.

Anti-racism in University Sport with Braeden McKenzie
Tuesday, MAY 10, 7 PM PDT over Zoom

The Social Justice Committee invites you to a presentation and Q&A over Zoom with Braeden McKenzie, the next speaker in the 2021/22 series on anti-racism.

Zoom link will be sent out to congregation e-mail list ahead of the event.

Braeden is a PhD candidate, and Course Instructor working in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto.  Braeden served as a Senior Research Assistant and co-writer for a report on Indigeneity, Diaspora, Equity and Anti-racism in Sport (IDEAS) at the Research Lab at the University of Toronto.

Because not everyone understands what racism is, or how white privilege operates, many athletes have had to suffer in silence. The IDEAS project sought to learn more about the experiences of Black, Biracial, and Indigenous student-athletes coaches, and sport administrators.

Some of the focus questions for this research project were:

  • How is racism and anti-racism perceived and experienced in the Black, Biracial, and Indigenous sport communities on university campuses?
  • What role do post-secondary educational institutions play in racism and anti-racism experiences in sport?
  • How can anti-racism be improved in the sport community at the post-secondary educational institutional level?

Listen to a one minute video about this report.

Women in Faith Trunk Sale

Tha
nks to everyone who donated items to be sold, came out and sold items and especially those who came and bought items. It was a great day and we made $410.00 which will be used to support Women in Faith activities.

Support for Gift and her Child

Lutheran Church of the Cross' Social Justice Committee through the Refugee sponsorship program are currently supporting a young woman and her child while they wait to come to Canada.  Thanks to donations received we have the required funds in our Refugee account to support them when they arrive. But we are also trying to support them as they wait for the necessary details to be completed to allow them to come to Canada. Gift and her child have no living relatives. Our contact is a friend who is a newcomer in Victoria.  Gift needs to pay rent, buy food, clothing, and pay for dental or medical needs as they arise, but is unable to work where they are living. The extra funds are needed to keep them safe, healthy, and sheltered.

A volunteer on the sponsorship committee is helping with rent every month and tries to support them with medical and dental bills but is unable to respond as well as needed in times of crisis. Visit the GoFundMe page here that has been set up by Patience, a friend. Although the funds raised to date are $4,395 of the $5000 goal, these funds have been used for expenses over the past two years. All expenses are tracked by the committee.

The church cannot receive or send tax receipted funds for this purpose. If there are individuals who are able to assist with supporting Gift at this time, you may do so through the GoFundMe page, or directly through a member of the Committee. Please contact the Church office if you have any questions. Thank you for considering this request to help keep Gift and her child safe during this difficult time of waiting. Any financial gift is appreciated.
