Smudging in Worship
This Sunday, March 26, we will again be offering smudging before worship. The Board of Worship is supporting this generous offer from Boston, who is Métis, to lead us in this ritual practice. Smudging is the act of burning a sacred medicine (most often sage) and letting the smoke act as a cleansing. It is a spiritual practice that is used in many Indigenous spaces, even among nations that did not originally practice it. The purpose is to center oneself, and cleanse negative energies, emotions, and sometimes spirits. However, this is just one conception of smudging. The meaning can change depending on the person and the nation that they are from. Boston will be offering smudging just outside of the church doors. If you are comfortable, you are welcome to partake, but there is absolutely no pressure. There will be smoke and the smell lingers on the clothes, so a warning to those with respiratory problems. It should not affect the sanctuary in any way though. This is a practice that was introduced to us during Orange Shirt Day worship by Carolyn Klaassen. We hope to offer smudging on a monthly basis as Boston is available. We recognize this is not a practice to be led by non-Indigenous people.
For more background check out this article on smudging.

One more week collecting donations for Anawim House
We are thankful for Jerry, director of Anawim House, sharing his personal testimony last Sunday. Many people found it moving. It often helps to connect a face to a local agency and shelter. Knowing that the items we donate will directly benefit residents at the same house that helped save Jerry’s life. A home he continues to sustain and grow today.
Soon Anawim will be serving not only men, but also women. Following the model of Anawim’s men’s house, Anawim’s women’s house will soon be opening its doors! This project has been a dream of Anawim’s for many years and was kick started by an incredibly generous person who donated her property outright for this very purpose. With the extensive development and construction expertise of Aryze Development, with the support from the City of Victoria’s Housing Reserve fund and along with other community programs this has been a Greater Victoria community wide collaborative effort.
The new Women’s House will feature seven private rooms with partial bathrooms, a communal kitchen and communal living spaces. Incorporating a ‘Family Model’ approach, the Women’s House will be able to provide a safe home to women at risk of homelessness due to poverty, fleeing violence or various health issues. For more information see: Anawim House to Begin Construction on New Women’s Residence (victoriafoundation.bc.ca)
We will continue to collect much needed items through out the season of Lent: toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, combs, hair brushes, men’s and women’s underwear, feminine hygiene products, new and slightly used towels, wash cloths, reusable water bottles and individually wrapped sweet treats such as chocolate and granola bars. $5 or $10 gift cards to Tim Hortons or any fast-food establishment are also appreciated.
With thanks for your generosity,
The Social Justice Committee

Coats & Blankets for Our Place
As is our custom, we will be collecting coats and blankets for the good folk at Our Place on Palm Sunday – April 2. You are invited to bring new or gently used coats, warm clothing items, blankets and sleeping bags to worship, and lay them at the Table before service, where they will be blessed and taken to Our Place for distribution to those most needing something warm and cozy during these chilly spring nights.
On behalf of the Our Place family and the Social Justice Committee, thank you!

- We offer worship in both live (in-person) and livestream (online) formats.

This personal choice includes all those involved in leading our services, including presiding ministers, worship assistants, musicians, choir members and ushers. Please see a member of the Council if you have any questions or thoughts on the matter.
