A time to say “Thank You” to Deb Neal, retiring as Administrative Assistant
This Sunday in worship and at the reception following we will give thanks for the ministry of Deb Neal as Administrative Assistant for Church of the Cross for the past six years. Deb is retiring to spend more time caring for her parents who live in Montreal. We give thanks for Deb’s caring service to the congregation and support of its many ministries and activities and her always helpful and friendly presence in the office. She will be greatly missed and we are very grateful for her time with us. We pray God’s blessings, grace and peace go with her in all that is next to unfold.

Please consider becoming a Luther Court Assistant
One of the long-time ministries of the congregation is sharing Sunday morning worship with those who live at Luther Court. Worship books are assembled by office staff each week and taken to the Luther Court Library so that they are there Sunday morning. Then through the audio/video feed, residents are able to share in Sunday morning worship assisted by the caring ministry of people of the congregation that serve as Luther Court Assistants with them in the Library.
We are in need of 4 persons (or 2 teams) to be a part of this ministry. This would mean that you would be part of a 2 month rotation that requires being at Luther Court once every 2 months. Dates will be sent out ahead of time and orientation is available.
Please consider this opportunity for ministry and speak to Jeanie Stann, any member of the Worship Board, or contact the church office if you are interested - 250-477-6222

Black History Month, February 2020
For this final Black History Month instalment, one thing for us to pay attention to are the ways in which racialized groups in Canada support one another. For example this week members of the Black community in Victoria are signalling their support for Indigenous Youth for Wet’suwet’en. Out of respect for Indigenous youth who are camping at the ceremonial gates of the Legislature members of the Black community have withdrawn their participation from the Black History Month Hall of Honour Event scheduled on February 27 at the Legislature. As a result the event has been postponed.
As white settler Canadians our role is to listen and respect voices on the margins. In announcing the event has been postponed, no mention is made of pipelines, blockades, or wider issues that have swept across the country. It is an act of love with another marginalized group within Greater Victoria. We should not forget the love and grace in acts of solidarity like this that too often are missed given the heightened confusion and anger that pervades wider conversations.
It is along these lines of respect and humility that we interpret the slogans of racialized groups. Take for example Black Lives Matter. We need to reflect upon our reactions when we see or hear this slogan. If we find ourselves saying, “No, ALL lives matter” where does this knee-jerk reaction come from? Saying Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter. Saying Black Lives Matter is exactly that, urging that we too would hold that Black Lives Matter in a world in which they often do not, including around Victoria where Black folks find themselves as part of a small vulnerable minority.
Part of our Lenten discipline can be examining our hearts, letting go of all the things that prevent us from listening to people whose experiences are different from our own. This isn’t to prescribe a specific way of being Christian, but rather really to listen to our neighbours with the same empathy with which we long to be heard when we experience suffering and pain.
