Oakcrest Preschool
Oakcrest Preschool is an independent cooperative that leases space from Church of the Cross. Church Council has been in conversation with the Preschool over a
number of months about rent and information related to the possible housing
development with Luther Court. The most recent conversations have not resulted in what the Council feels is a fair resolution of the rent or a more collaborative working relationship. Council has decided to end the lease with the Preschool effective June, 2020. This was a difficult decision. But it provides a full year for the Preschool to find another facility. Council will be open to various opportunities for the future. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Council Chair, Joanne Solomonson, jtsolomonson@gmail.com or the church office.

‘You set the table and the lesson will come.’
Charla Huber, director of communications and Indigenous relations for M’akola Housing Society and M’akola Development Services, shared with us this quote at a recent Dessert and Dialogue conversation: ‘You set the table and the lesson will come.’ She learned it from an elder, emphasizing that bringing people together for a meal is an end in itself. We shouldn’t worry about dictating moral lessons to be learned from an event, including what reconciliation should look like. The outcome will take time to unfold and an investment in building relationships, sharing meals together, gaining trust over time. See Charla’s weekly op-ed in the Time Colonist June 9, 2019, for her full discussion on this theme.
‘You set the table and the lesson will come,’ is also behind the upcoming picnic on July 13, 3-7 PM, Island View Beach, at which we are welcoming together members of local Indigenous nations and non-Indigenous folks. Church of the Cross’ Truth & Reconciliation Committee has discovered that this work is often messy, we make mistakes, and yet there is grace in the midst of fellowship and working together.
We are learning one thing is important is that we keep doing the work, continue building relationships, and meeting people in person. This is true for building any friendship, spending time together, caring for one another, listening the stories and needs, even when they make us uncomfortable.
‘Set the table and the lesson will come,’ is something we practice in worship every Sunday, thinking about our celebrating holy communion, listening to God’s word, and discerning the work of the Spirit in the world. Let us continue doing this faithful work, rooted in love of neighbour.
