The deadline for all Crossroads submissions is Wednesday at noon. Thank you.

Thank you to the Social Justice Committee
for their
Coffee on the Corner event, held Thursday morning outside Church of the Cross.  We celebrated World Refugee Day, emphasizing welcoming  the stranger,  and chatting with our neighbours. It made for a lovely morning.  Welcome All!
Summer Tradition
It has become the
tradition that, during the summer period, lemonade/ice tea and cookies are set up in the foyer after church in place of the full coffee that we experience the rest of the year.   This year, that change will occur on June 23rd.  Happy Summer!
Indigenous Indentity
Thursday, June 27th  -  7:00 to 8:30 pm

June’s Dessert and Dialogue will be featuring Adam Olsen,
member of the Tsartlip Nation and the MLA for Saanich North and the Islands.

Please bring a dessert to share. Many Thanks!
These events are sponsored by the Truth and Reconciliation Committee.
So You Want to Close the Borders?

So you want to close the borders? What do you even mean by that?
Are you tired of being able to travel almost anywhere in the entire world? You don’t want open doors and red carpets wherever you travel? Are you tired of Mexican beaches or job opportunities in Johannesburg? Do you want to sink Caribbean cruise ships and blow up airports? Is it closed borders for your own people you want?
Or is it for someone else?
Are you tired of German tourists or Canadian businessmen? Are you tired of your uncle Joe who lives in Baja? You don’t want to see anymore Japanese tourists taking pictures of your landmarks? Is it closed borders for rich people you want?
Or it is for someone else?
Are you tired of tacos and donairs? Do you hate culture influences, cool inventions and colourful interventions? Do you get headaches of British shows or Swedish movies? Do you dream about Big Macs in front of the umpteenth sequel to Here Lives the Heartland on the domestically built TV set (no foreign parts!)? Is it closed borders for culture you want?
Or is it something else?
Are you tired of the globalized economy? Do you long for endless lineups at border controls, piles of paper work, tons of tariffs or a stop of all imports? Maybe you see how children are sweating in the cocoa orchards, how wars are fueled by conflict diamonds, how women’s backs are broken in sweatshops? Maybe you rage against the injustice that we live by other peoples’ sacrifice, empty other peoples’ fields and mines, enjoy the fruits of other people’s hard labor? Is it closed borders for goods you want?
No, not even that. It’s something else. It’s someone else.
The people who have not eaten Chinese or seen Star Wars. The people who don’t fly. The people who don’t seek beaches or country cabins.
Not your own people. Not the tourists. Not the business people. Not the food. Not the culture. Not the goods.
The suffering. That’s who you want to close the borders for.
Because it’s not really closed borders you want. You want to have open borders for everything and everyone,
except the people who most need them.

‘You set the table and the lesson will come.’

Charla Huber, director of communications and Indigenous relations for M’akola Housing Society and M’akola Development Services, shared with us this quote at a recent
Dessert and Dialogue conversation: ‘You set the table and the lesson will come.’ She learned it from an elder, emphasizing that bringing people
together for a meal is an end in itself. We shouldn’t worry about dictating moral lessons to be learned from an event, including what reconciliation should look like. The outcome will take time to unfold and an investment in building relationships, sharing meals together, gaining trust over time. See Charla’s weekly op-ed in the Time Colonist June 9, 2019, for her full discussion on this theme.

‘You set the table and the lesson will come,’ is also behind the upcoming picnic on July 13, 3-7 PM, Island View Beach, at which we are welcoming together members of local Indigenous nations and non-Indigenous folks. Church of the Cross’ Truth & Reconciliation Committee has discovered that this work is often messy, we make mistakes, and yet there is grace in the midst of fellowship and working together.

We are learning one thing is important is that we keep doing the work, continue building relationships, and meeting people in person. This is true for building any friendship, spending time together, caring for one another, listening the stories and needs, even when they make us uncomfortable.

‘Set the table and the lesson will come,’ is something we practice in
worship every Sunday, thinking about our celebrating holy communion, listening to God’s word, and discerning the work of the Spirit in the world. Let us continue doing this faithful work, rooted in love of neighbour.

This Sunday we celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day.
