News from Our Pastors
We appreciate all the feedback about the new church web-site. Several of your suggestions have allowed us to catch typos and make updates that better represent the ministries at Church of the Cross. Deb is updating the on-line calendar each week and helping make adjustments. Pr. Lyndon is responsible for overall curation of the web-site in consultation with Pr. Lyle. You can check the church calendar anytime from your phone, tablet, or computer at www.lutheranvictoria.ca and click on the Calendar icon in the top right-hand corner or look at the Events menu.
Do you have photos from church events to share with church social media? Send them to Deb or Pr. Lyndon so we can share the good news at work at Church of the Cross with a wider audience. Please seek the permission of anyone recognizable in your photos before forwarding them for use on the website and social media.
Now that the web-site is up and running we are beginning to shift focus to other communications and evangelism goals. Given that communication has increasingly moved to on-line platforms, we are looking at proclaiming the gospel in new ways as well. Here are a few we are considering. Each will take some time to develop and bring on-line. All of these are ideas we are discussing together with Board of Deacons, keeping people in the loop, and seeking feedback.
Blog: blogging has been a popular mode of sharing thoughts and ideas for around 15 years. A blog is basically a forum for sharing short, pithy op-ed commentary curated with a specific focus. We are looking at beginning a blog with the working title Lifting Up, for lifting up commentary at the crossroads of faith, social justice, and culture. This will be an opportunity for Pr. Lyle, Pr. Lyndon, and guest contributors sharing theological commentary on issues of our time. For example, a blog entry could focus on the Biblical mandate of caring for the stranger and the church’s work with refugee sponsorship. Another could look at questions around reconciliation and Christian faith. We will send out a communique with the launch, including links on the web-site and social media.
Sermon Podcast: podcasting has become popular in the past ten years, sharing audio interviews and stories on-line. Generally, you can either stream podcasts on-line or you can download them and listen to them on your phone, tablet, or computer. Someone recently noted podcasting is a low-tech throwback to talk radio in some respects. We want to begin recording and offering sermons as a podcast people can access on the church web-site. We are currently researching how best to do this in order to offer the listener a high-quality experience. Sermon podcasting has become an evangelism tool, reaching folks without a church home, as well as helping others listen to a sermon who are unable to join for worship on a Sunday morning.
Interview Podcast: there is a plethora of interview style podcasts to choose from, whether from media outlets like CBC or thousands of independent podcast producers. It is a relatively inexpensive medium to share a message with a large audience. Presently we are considering an interview-based podcast that could work in tandem with Lifting Up blog, for audio storytelling around faith, justice, and culture. This could involve interviewing ecumenical partners, multi-faith leaders, scholars, and community organizers. For example, one episode could feature Shelbourne Community Kitchen talking about their work alleviating food scarcity in our neighbourhoods.
Live-streaming worship: several people have asked about whether Church of the Cross would consider live-streaming worship, in order to expand our reach beyond Luther Court to shut-ins at home, for people to tune in when they are sick at home, and beyond. Broadcasting on the internet is significantly more involved than our current closed circuit broadcast to Luther Court and would require an investment in new technology and learning new skills. We remain interested in this opportunity, recognizing it will take time to plan for upgrades.
Each of these new forms of communication, while within reach technologically, are time intensive, so we will proceed at a pace that is sustainable, seeking to put out high quality content that is consistent with our theology. Pr. Lyndon is overseeing the rollout of these new forms of communication, working together with Pr. Lyle, and a whole host of people in order to make these projects a success. If you have gifts in digital art, compose and perform music for intros and outros, or have interests in audio and video editing, including learning how, please drop the co-pastors a line:

pastorlyle@shaw.ca, pastorlyndon@shaw.ca, or talk to them in person.

Summer Tradition
It has become the
tradition that, during the summer period, lemonade/ice tea and cookies are set up in the foyer after church in place of the full coffee that we experience the rest of the year.   This year, that change will occur on June 23rd.  Happy Summer!

Thank you to
everyone for your generous financial gifts to our National Church through your Praise Offering donations.  Lutheran Church of the Cross will submit $3,015.00 to the National Church to assist with its many good works. With gratitude to the faithful people of Church of the Cross!
Coffee on the Corner

The Social Justice Committee will be

COUNTERS NEEDED FOR SUNDAY WORSHIP
We continue to need volunteers to help count the
offering on Sundays. This usually takes less than one hour following Sunday service. Presently counting teams are asked to count once every 7-8 weeks, the more volunteers we have the less often the rotation comes around.
If you are interested in volunteering starting this summer please contact the Financial Secretary Barry Walker: 250-381-1698 or 250-818-7931,
bhwalker@shaw.ca, church mailbox #92, or leave a message in the church office for Barry.
Calling All Collectors
The Social Justice Committee invites you to raid your
Tickle Trunk, jewelry box, and closets for our upcoming Trunk Sale, Nov. 2, 2019. It is a fund raiser to support our refugee work and more details will follow, and a Save That Date reminder. Its never too soon to start… so have fun looking through your old items.  Bring your donations to church where there will be a marked storage box in the back of the narthex.  Your generous support is an ongoing source of encouragement for the work we do as a congregation.
