In-Person Worship, Sunday, 10 AM PDT

Church Council continues to work to see that in-person worship is safer for everyone. We will adjust our plans as health orders change.

Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is the best protection for the health of yourself and others. We strongly encourage everyone who is eligible to be fully vaccinated.

We will continue to livestream worship each Sunday.

June 12, Holy Trinity
Everyone planning to come to worship are asked to follow these requirements:
  • If you are not feeling well and experiencing any Covid-19 related symptoms or if you are not vaccinated, please stay home and participate in worship online.
  • You are encouraged but not required to wear a mask when entering the building and throughout worship.
  • Observe social distancing.
  • Sanitize or wash hands as needed.
  • You are welcome to sing and you are encouraged to wear a mask.
  • We will greet one another and share the peace at a distance.
  • Holy Communion will be served with bread and individual glasses of wine that are spaced in the trays. You may commune with bread or wine alone if you wish.
  • It is not required that people register for worship ahead of time or sign in as you arrive.
We will continue to make adjustments as needed and keep you informed of any changes. Your feedback on your experience with in-person worship is valued.  Please let any member of Church Council, Pastors, or the church office know of any questions, concerns or ideas for making in-person worship and Sunday School safer and meaningful for everyone.
Praying Friends 2020-2022 Wrap-up + Ice Cream

The Board of Care for Communities is organizing a special activity this coming Sunday, June 12th, to celebrate and wrap up the 2020-2022 edition of our Praying Friends program. Praying friends and children being prayed for and their families are invited to participate in a moment of prayer and blessing during worship followed by ice cream and fellowship after service. While enjoying their treats, children and families are invited to meet their respective praying friends for a chat. Participants are encouraged to share a short story with the family they have been paired with. We are looking forward to hosting this in-person activity once again.

Reverend Lyle McKenzie
Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD)
Tuesday, June 14, 2022 | 2:30 pm PDT

It is with great joy that we share the news of Rev. Lyle McKenzie’s honorary degree at the University of Victoria. The convocation ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 2:30 PM. It will also be webcast and can be viewed at the following link:
https://www.uvic.ca/ceremonies/convocation/

Congratulations Pastor Lyle!

Reverend Lyle McKenzie has served as part-time chaplain at the University of Victoria for 19 years. A visionary leader, he helped to develop programs within congregations to advance Truth and Reconciliation and the inclusion of Queer siblings. He was instrumental in developing the recent Memorandum between UVic and faith communities and has been a strong contributor to the growth of multifaith cooperation on campus.
Reverend McKenzie has been a life force in establishing the Shelbourne Community Kitchen in response to food insecurity. He has also worked with others to establish a congregational Choral Scholar program and an affordable post-secondary student house community.
Reverend McKenzie is one of the authors of "Faith Forum" articles in the Times Colonist. And with Luther Court, Reverend McKenzie has been a vital contributor to a proposed affordable intergenerational housing project for post-secondary students and elders to live in an intentional community together.

This honour recognizes Reverend McKenzie for his teaching by example, his creative approach to worship through art and music, and his dedication to public service.

The Métis by Boston Laferte

June is National Indigenous People’s History month. This week, Boston Laferté shares an overview of the Métis. Boston is an active member of the Métis community here in Victoria. He will be graduating June 14 from UVIC with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Indigenous Studies. Boston will begin studies at the UVIC Faculty of Law in September. He is an active member at Church of the Cross.

Who are the Métis? There are many misconceptions that Métis simply means mixed between Indigenous and European. However, while the origins of the Métis are in unions between French fur traders of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and Indigenous women, the Métis today are a people who share a distinct land-base, culture, and history. The Métis homelands stretch across much of the land now referred to as: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, North Dakota, and Montana.

Today, every western province has a Métis government with chartered communities. On Vancouver Island there are several chartered communities of the MNBC. Church of the Cross is in the community of Métis Nation Greater Victoria (MNGV).

Buffalo was a key part of Métis life. The Métis followed the buffalo, and many Métis families were part of buffalo brigades. These brigades had their own way of life, their own governance system, and their own laws.

The Métis were an essential part of the history of the prairies. They were on the front lines of trade, and they were key in diplomacy between other Indigenous peoples and Europeans. Because of this, many Métis spoke several languages. French, English, nêhiyawêwin, anishinaabemowin, siksiká, sioux, apsáalooke, and the language of the Métis, Michif.

Michif was primarily spoken in the buffalo brigades, but it was also spoken in other environments. There are also misconceptions about the Michif language. If you hear someone say that Michif is just a mix of French and Cree, that’s not quite true. While the influence is there, the Michif language is distinct.

Some key words and phrases in Southern Michif:

Taanishi – Hello (Tawn-shay)
Taanishi kiiya – How are you (Tawn-shay key-uh)
Nimiyoayaan – I’m good (knee-me-yo-ayawn)
Maarsii – Thank you (mar-see)
Kawapamitin mina – See you later (kah-wah-pah-mit-in me-nah)
