Amazing Journey Summer Day Camp

At Day Camp we have had Paul and Lydia visiting the kids to share about the love of God and ways in which Jesus breaks down boundaries. We are
experiencing a seaside adventure in Ancient Greece and how scripture written back then comes alive for us in the world today proclaimed anew.

We are teaching that God’s love is expansive and cannot be contained by the differences we use to divide one another into different camps, including
difference in language, dress, custom, food, skin colour, and who we love.
One of the songs we are singing is Draw the Circle Wide, describing the ways in which the Spirit disrupts the circles we create that exclude others. Kids know firsthand the ways in which people get left out whether at recess, playing a game, in friend circles, or in church. Together we are proclaiming God’s love, freedom from exclusion, and professing faith in Jesus, expressed in concrete acts of love, including collecting food for Shelbourne Community Kitchen.

Day Camp is a success in large part due to months of planning from
leaders representing three partner congregations: St. Luke Cedar Hill, St. George’s Cadboro Bay, and Church of the Cross. Together they planned an amazing array of worship, crafts, games, snacks, and Bible story telling. It is wonderful to see kids
learning discipleship, building them up in the Christian faith, becoming church leaders today.

Clean-up in the Undeveloped Area by July 15
All Boards, Committees and groups with items in the
undeveloped storage area are asked to go through them by July 15 and identify and clearly mark what needs to remain and what can be recycled/disposed. After that date, the Trustees will be removing everything unmarked to clean up the space.
Thank you for your cooperation and thank you to those who have already done some sorting! If you have any questions, please contact Grant Froyland at

gfroyland@hotmail.com or the church office.

Nature is a Gift

In recent decades we have become particularly aware of the crucial
importance of our relationship with nature. As long as we relate to the trees, the rivers, the
mountains, the fields, and the oceans as properties to be manipulated by us
according to our real or fabricated needs, nature remains opaque and does not
reveal to us its true being.

When we relate to a tree as nothing more than a potential chair, it cannot speak much to us about growth. When a river is only a dumping place for our industrial wastes, it no longer informs us about movement. And when we relate to a flower as nothing more than a model for a plastic decoration, the flower loses its power to
reveal to us the simple beauty of life. When we relate to nature primarily as
property to be used, it becomes opaque, and this opaqueness is manifested in our society as pollution. The dirty rivers, the smog-filled skies, the strip-mined hills, and the ravaged woods are sad signs of our false relationship with nature.

Our difficult and very urgent task is to accept the truth that nature is not primarily a property to be possessed, but a gift to be received with admiration and gratitude. Only when we make a deep bow to the rivers, oceans, hills, and mountains that offer us a home, only then can they become transparent and reveal to us their real
meaning.

News from the Social Justice Committee
VINTAGE JEWELRY & CLOTHING REQUEST
The Social Justice Committee is hosting a fundraising event to help us continue our work with refugee sponsorships.  An upcoming Vintage Jewelry & Clothing Sale with English Tea is scheduled for Saturday November 2nd, from 10am 2pm in the church Upper Hall.  A SAVE the DATE card will follow in mid-July.  As a committee, our last fund raiser was held in 2017 and was a successful Wine & Cheese Silent Auction. Due to fantastic congregational support we were able to contribute to the following sponsorships: Diane, Feruz, Merhawi, and the Nuora family.

In order to successfully replenish the Refugee Fund, we request your help and donations.  We will be collecting vintage jewelry and clothing from now until October. We are asking for good quality jewelry, both fun and wearable, along with articles of vintage clothing such as woman’s scarves, hats, purses, and men’s ties.  If you know of anyone from the wider community who might be willing to donate such articles, be sure to spread the word about this event and the cause.

Please bring the jewelry and clothing to the church. A small marked container for the items will be in the back of the entranceway, and then, stored in a secure place.
If you have questions about the value of the jewelry or any questions at all, please call me at 250.999.2547.
With thanks and appreciation for your ongoing support,
Susan Beiderwieden, The Social Justice Committee
You are invited to come see the exciting changes at Our Place’s Therapeutic Recovery Community, a long-term residential treatment program for people struggling with addiction.
