Lower Hall and Shelbourne Community Kitchen Update
As reported last year, the Church’s rental agreement with Oakcrest Playschool ended on June 30, and the lower hall is now vacant. We are very pleased that the Playschool has found a new location in the area and will continue to provide childcare in the neighbourhood.
Some months ago the Development Committee (a Committee appointed by Council to oversee potential building  developments, including the Affordable Intergenerational Housing project with Luther Court; long term rental/leasing requests, potential development of the storage area under the sanctuary) met with members of the Shelbourne Community Kitchen to consider a proposal to rent and develop the lower hall as a new location for the Kitchen. (The Kitchen’s present location on 3541 Shelbourne Street is under a Temporary Use Permit which expires on September 15 and cannot be further renewed. The Kitchen has been actively searching for a new location for two years.) The Kitchen and Church shared in the cost of a feasibility study with Studio 531 Architects (the same Architect for the proposed housing development with Luther Court) which identified the lower hall as a feasible and suitable space for the Kitchen, the potential scope of redevelopment, and preliminary estimate of costs. The Kitchen and Church also shared in the cost of a Hazardous Materials Assessment of the lower hall primarily for asbestos which resulted in expected findings and limited costs for remediation.
Conversations with the Kitchen paused during the pandemic but restarted in recent weeks. The Kitchen and Church are now finalizing an offer to lease agreement that would have the Kitchen develop and occupy the lower hall and continue to use a portion of the storage area under the sanctuary for its operations for the next ten years. The Kitchen would develop the lower hall to meet its needs as a food premises, making use of the entrance off Cedar Hill Road for its main access, and would be responsible for remediation and renovation costs. The Church would receive monthly rent for the use of the lower hall and a portion of the storage area. The rent would be fixed for five years and reviewed for the second five years of the lease. The Kitchen would be responsible for its portion of the utilities. The Church would have occasional access to the Kitchen at agreed upon times for church use such as church and community suppers. With the agreement of the Church, the Kitchen has contracted the services of Studio 531 Architects for redevelopment design, including all necessary permits.
The intention is that when the offer to lease is agreed upon by both Church Council and the Kitchen Board, a lease agreement will be finalized and approved by both parties before any renovation work would begin. The Council, in first considering the proposal from the Kitchen back in January and again at a meeting of the Council executive in June, sees the relationship between the mission and services of Shelbourne Community Kitchen and the mission and activities of Church of the Cross as positive and complementary, supporting the work of both. The Church has had initial consultations with its community partners, including Luther Court and partner churches and they have expressed support for the lease arrangement.
We will continue to report on decisions as they unfold and ask for your prayers in the process of this potential development for the Kitchen and the Church. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact a member of the Development Committee – Helene Walker, Grant Froyland and Garth Tastad, Pastor Lyle or Pastor Lyndon, or a member of Council.
COVID-19 Update
A COVID Task Force has been assembled at Church of the Cross and is beginning to meet. They will be responsible for drawing up best practices and protocols around trials for worship in the church space, as well as church and outside groups using church spaces. While details are yet to be decided, one key feature will be clear communication with the congregation both in terms of timing of events and protocols. There will also be opportunities to hear from you, how you are coping during the pandemic, and your expectations as we work through these issues. Look for updates in the coming weeks.
KAIROS Year of Prayer: Holding Close to Our Hearts
Beginning March 11, 2020, the
KAIROS Steering Committee began a Year of Prayer for the people, families and communities connected to The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the National Student Memorial Register of children who didn't come home from Indian Residential Schools. Though impacted greatly by COVID-19, the Year of Prayer remains in our hearts. A new video shares about this initiative. Please click here to watch.
Day Camp
On-line Day Camp is a success. A couple dozens kids have joined at home for a daily Zoom call for an hour, including songs, Bible stories, craft, games, movement, many of them in small groups. It has been an opportunity to see friends and make new ones, while very much engaging with a wealth of craft materials in a craft box each child received prior to the beginning of camp. Craft materials were individually packaged for each day and every material needed for a craft or activity was thought through and included in the box, so that every child could fully participate. Day Camp organizers went above and beyond to make sure details were tended to. Many of the camp leaders gathered at Lutheran Church of the Cross, distancing throughout the building, while others joined from home. Photos below were taken both at home and at church, including one photo of O’Reilly who has been working hard in the church office. - Pr. Lyndon

Lutheran Church of the Cross - Annual Spring Cleanup 2020 Continues

To those who have been able to help to date, Thank you! for your work around and in the church building. The building and grounds are much improved! Some have worked in small groups, physically distancing, while others worked alone. Your contributions are all making a big difference to keeping our building and spaces clean and in good shape. Every little bit helps. If you are still able to help, you may contact the church office at lutheranchurchofthecross@shaw.ca or call 250-477-6222 for the sign up.
