Video Alert

Starting July 8th, a video series called Acts of Creation will be shared on Thursdays here in Crossroads and on the congregation’s Facebook page.

Watch weekly for short videos with either a Greening Committee member or congregational friend as they share their passion for God’s creation and how that love is lived out through their acts.

The series kicks off with an introduction by Susan Beiderwieden, Greening Committee Chair. Check out the intro video here.

On behalf of the Committee, I invite you to share your passions too. Email your tips, stories, and ideas to susandb@telus.net as we prepare for the Time of Creation Season in the fall.

In Peace,
Susan
Shelbourne Community Kitchen Plant Sale

A Big Thank You to everyone who donated plants, ideas, time and enthusiasm to the 2021 Shelbourne Community Kitchen Plant Sale Fundraiser! We had another successful Covid Style Plant Sale at the foot of my drive way in Saanich and raised $5038 for the Kitchen.  Hundreds of plants were donated to the sale by members of the three partner congregations, Kitchen volunteers, friends, neighbours and passers-by. The Plant Stand had quite a following… some people showed up several times a week to share what was going on in their lives and buy plants!

Some of the left-over plants (flowers and veggies) were donated to the shelter at Mt. Tolmie Hospital along with some garden tools. The residents are rejuvenating the courtyard garden and by the time we left the dirt was flying and the plants were getting put in the ground!

Again, a big thank you to all involved!!!

Conferral of the Companion of the Worship Arts 2020/21

The Companion of the Worship Arts is an honour conferred in recognition of significant contribution at the national level to the worship life at the national, synodical and congregational level of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and the national level of The Anglican Church of Canada. Last year, it was announced that the following individuals were the 2020 recipients of the Companion of the Worship Arts.

  • ELCIC: Robb Wilson, Toronto
  • ACC: Thomas Roach, Vancouver
Typically the award is presented at the National Worship Conference, which was scheduled to take place in person last year. Instead, the conferral took place ahead of the conference and was shared via video with conference attendees at this year's online 2021 National Worship Conference. You can watch a video of the conferral here.

Congratulations to Angela Chorney and Pr. Lyle McKenzie for their organizing of another successful worship conference.

“Creator, open our hearts to peace and healing between all people.
Creator, open our hearts to provide and protect for all children of the earth.
Creator, open our hearts to respect for the earth, and all the gifts of the earth.
Creator, open our hearts to end exclusion, violence and fear among all.
Thank you for the gifts of this day and every day. “
Mi ‘Kmaq prayer

Artist Statement

There are many words, poems, lyrics, prayers that inspire me. I changed my mind a few times about my inspiration for this project. Then, on May 27th, the bodies of 215 children were discovered in an unmarked mass grave at a Residential School in Kamloops BC. I knew that I wanted to weave for them. For the others that will be found. For the children who never returned home to their families. For the parents that never saw their children again, or knew what happened to them. To think about how we have failed the First Nations people here.  Since discovering Saori I have always woven through my feelings. Joy, gratitude, sorrow, fear, grief. I am grateful for this gift of expression.  I took 4 orange scarves and cut them into strips. Then re-wove them together in a 215 cm hanging. What was once whole was broken. What is broken can heal, however it will never be the same.

“Orange Shirt Day was created as an observance in 2013, and is designed to educate people and promote awareness in Canada about the Indian residential school system and the impact it has had on Indigenous communities for over a century—an impact recognized as a cultural genocide, and an impact that continues today.”

Artist Bio

Lynn Jones has been a Saori weaver for over 12 years. The improvisational aspect of Saori and the therapeutic qualities of the weaving and the loom itself, help her manage chronic back pain. In the last 5 years Lynn has focused on clothing design, making her hand woven fabric into wearable art. Every piece that Lynn weaves uses only natural fibres, both new and recycled. Recent weaving explorations have included hand made clay pieces and beach combing finds. She is a member of the Scattered Artist Tour in Victoria BC.

Asking for your help!

Dear friends: The Social Justice Committee can’t stop thanking you for your very generous giving for the important work of sponsoring refugees and newcomers to Canada! Thank you not only for your financial help, but for helping to fill welcoming baskets brimming with good things for each arrival, and most especially, thank you for your prayers.

We have been in regular contact with Gift. She reports that her baby is growing, teething, and now sitting up! She is coping with the challenges of being a single mom and a refugee in the time of COVID, and sends thanks to those sponsoring her, who help by sending a small amount of cash each month. However, she has had some significant medical and dental expenses for herself and her baby, and the balance collected in the Go Fund Me page has dwindled significantly.

While the Social Justice refugee fund has a healthy balance (thank you!), according to LCC’s charity status, we are not allowed to forward funds overseas to help her out. We are asking you to please share this Go Fund Me link on your social media, in hopes of reaching as many people as possible. Once again (and again!) we thank you for helping us tell of this need. It makes an enormous difference in Gift’s, and her child’s life.

For Brian

As many will know, our congregation’s Cantor, Brian Wismath and partner Emily, will be moving to Ontario later in the summer. We are making plans to say farewell. Part of a gift to Brian is gathering cards and messages for a scrapbook that Lennor Stieda is putting together with others. Please email your card or message to lennorstieda@gmail.com or drop them off at the church office. Receiving them in early July would be appreciated.  We are also gathering funds for a gift for Brian which can also be dropped off or mailed to the church office. Brian’s last Sunday with us is August 22. More information about a planned farewell will be shared soon.
