With Sadness

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Ken Warren on Tuesday, January 17. Our prayers for God’s comfort are with Sharon and family and all who grieve with them. Burial will take place later.

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Clint Dykeman on Thursday, January 19. The funeral for Clint will take place on Saturday, February 4 at 3 PM at Church of the Cross. The funeral will also be livestreamed. Our prayers for God’s comfort are with the Dykeman family and all who grieve with them.

Rest eternal grant them, O God. And let light perpetual shine upon them.
Reconciliation on the Prairies

The work of reconciliation between Canada’s Indigenous peoples and settlers is the responsibility of all Canadians. This truth is apparent in the movie link about how Lutherans, Mennonites and Saskatchewan First Nations address historical injustices and seek ways to live reconciliation.
Share this link with others who might find it helpful.

Truth and Reconciliation Committee
Women in Faith

The Women in Faith group arose from the national Evangelical Lutheran Women (ELW) which ceased operations in 2010. At that time the women of Lutheran Church of the Cross expressed a desire to continue in some form within our congregation. For a while we continued to call ourselves ELW, however after a few years it was decided that a name change and update to our focus was needed. The name Women in Faith was chosen as the preferred name and shortly thereafter the organizing committee became a subcommittee under the Board of Care for Communities. Currently the women’s Book Group and the Stitch and Chat group are organized by the committee. As well the group hosts receptions after celebration of life services, has held garage sales, and hosted pancake dinners. The group does not receive funding through the church’s budgetary process but fundraises during the year in order to donate funds to the Karren Stinson Bursary Trust Fund, Shelbourne Community Kitchen, buy items for the church kitchen, and to provide Christmas gift bags to the women residing at Harrison Place a residence operated by the Victoria Women’s Transition House. All women of the congregation are invited to be part of Women in Faith. In 2023 Women in Faith will take on the task of organizing monthly social events for the congregation. Stay tuned for more information on this exciting addition to our role.
By Heart: Tuesday evening & Wednesday morning Zoom

By Heart books are on the way. Thank you to everyone who asked us to order a copy. Please make payment to to the church office for your copy. Let us know if you have any questions about that.

Next steps: Once books arrive we’ll distribute them and begin two weekly small groups. People are welcome to join over Zoom (no in-person gathering) either Tuesdays at 7 PM PST or Wednesday at 10 AM PST. It’s taking longer for the books to arrive than expected so we don’t know the exact start date but hope it will be soon. We sent out an organizing e-mail to people who expressed interest. If you did not receive an e-mail contact Pr. Lyndon at pastorlyndon@shaw.ca, who is handling communications, to be added to the list. Both Pr. Lyle and Pr. Lyndon will be sharing in leading the small groups.

Update on Luther House

Luther House is part of Church of the Cross’ support of campus ministry, providing housing for six post-secondary students. The Luther House Committee supports building community among the students and fostering a relationship with the congregation.

Luther House is open to students regardless of faith tradition, although we seek to build connections with the congregation and Inclusive Christians at UVic.

Some of what the residents commit to:

-Respect and support each other and the common life of the house community.

-Equally care for the common spaces of the house, including cleaning, dishes, garbage, recycling, etc.

-Share a meal together to discuss community, individual life, concerns and reflect and pray together. This includes planning a monthly community meal.

Luther House is currently full with six residents living there. The students lead busy lives working and attending classes. For some residents, this community living experience is the first time for them to live with others in a home community other than with their family.

Student Spotlight

Elijah is a resident at Luther House in his second year. He is an actor studying at the Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA). He has appeared in numerous theatre productions including Shrek the musical and this past fall he had a starring role in Pride & Prejudice as Mr. Darcy. Upcoming performances include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat coming up in April 2023 at McPherson Theatre.

Upcoming Crossroads will feature updates on other Luther House residents with their permission.

Invitation to participate

Dear VMS members & friends,
We're happy to announce an exciting new collaboration to take place on Sunday 5 February for this year's World Interfaith Harmony Week event. The Victoria Multifaith Society will be partnering with the Muslim Ahmadiyya community in hosting a special conference followed by an East Indian dinner, to be held at the Saanich Commonwealth Centre, Garry Oak Room, from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

The event will be moderated by Saanich Councillor Karen Harper.

This is an opportunity to get together to enjoy one another's company as well as a rich banquet of thoughts in a condensed period of time. Speakers will offer their perspectives on the topic of suffering, with all its implications on how we understand existence, live our lives and organize society.

It's a profound question, essential to our well-being and answered many times throughout the ages. Are there common threads? Do the responses contradict or complement one another?

Perspectives represented are from the Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Latter Day Saints, Muslim, New Thought and Sikh traditions. (See the link below for speaker bios.) All are welcome. There's no charge, but please take a minute to register at
World Religions Conference Victoria

We look forward to seeing you there!

Sheila Flood, E.D.

Centre for Earth & Spirit

The Centre for Earth & Spirit has transitioned their course Living Well, Dying Well to a six-week online offering, reaching an ever-widening circle of people interested in learning about holistic approaches to death and dying.

Drawing on cross-cultural wisdom, practical resources, embodied experience and collective insights, Living Well, Dying well is an evolving program for envisioning and experiencing a respectful and eco-responsible approach to end of life.

Participants contribute to this growing conversation and become an integral part of re-visioning what it means to age with beauty, grace, vulnerability and courage.

Information and registration are available on the above link and on Eventbrite:

Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) is inviting young adults (ages 18-30) who care about ending global hunger to apply for the upcoming event - the Young Voices edition of Hunger on the Hill. Each year, CFGB  takes a group of passionate folks to Ottawa with us to learn how to advocate for an end to global hunger and meet with MPs face-to-face, to communicate about the importance of this mission. This spring, our Hunger on the Hill event will take place from March 4 to 8. If interested, please apply when you click here. Applications close on February 8.
