Our prayers for God’s comfort are with the Dykeman family and all who grieve with them.

Kids are welcome to join us for Sunday School on February 12 & 26.

Transfiguration Sunday, Feb. 19 falls on Family Day Weekend, a time many families are away. We will provide crafts for kids to do at the kids table in the worship space on Sundays there is no Sunday School.
"To Mask Or Not To Mask?"

“To mask or not to mask,” is the question we continue to ask ourselves and others.  The Church Council discussed this question again in our last meeting. We are continuing to recommend that masks be worn but that it is optional and a matter of personal choice. To quote the latest guidance from the BC Center for Disease Control, "Be respectful of everyone whether they choose to wear a mask or not. It is important to be kind and respectful of other people's choices."  That's good advice!

The Karren Stinson Bursary

The Karren Stinson Bursary committee is pleased to announce that Sam Cornelson of Port Coquitlam, BC is the successful recipient of the Karren Stinson Bursary award for the year 2022, in the amount of $1000.

Mr. Cornelson was baptised as an infant at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Coquitlam, where he attended Sunday school, confirmation classes and youth groups.  Active in his church and the community, he also attended three Canadian Lutheran Anglican youth gatherings. Now in his final year at Douglas College, he will graduate with a degree in Physical Education and coaching in the spring. Mr. Cornelson is applying for a fifth year in education at either Simon Fraser University or the University of British Columbia. This would help him attain a teaching certificate and become eligible to work as a classroom teacher. The committee congratulates Mr. Cornelson for his strength as a student and the fine work he has done in the church and his community.  May God guide him in future endeavours and keep him safe.
Helen's Trees Art Installation - Sunday Feb. 5 between 4 - 8pm

Sharing an invite to an art installation in my mom’s home this next Sunday. My mom Helen died at home on Dec. 5th and I have been here in her home the past month making art. My mom was an artist. I transformed her bedroom into a studio and I have been going through her art studio materials and paintings and making my own art as a process of integration of the past year of taking care of her as her health failed. It has been a great experience to be here for which I am very grateful.

I would be delighted to see any of you on Sunday.  Bring friends if you want. Drop by or show up for the performances with my brother and niece along with art video screenings at the start and end of the open house.

In creative spirit,
Barbara Bickel

February Men’s Breakfast

The next Men’s will be on Saturday, February 18th, 9:30 - 10:30 AM at Church of the Cross. Michael Coughlin, president of the congregation and Grant Froyland, head trustee, will provide updates reflecting on the year past and what is ahead in the life of our community.  This is an opportunity to get better acquainted and an opportunity to ask questions.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner, February 21, 5 PM

We will be hosting the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner together with St. Luke’s on Tuesday, February 21 at 5:00 pm at St. Luke’s Cedar Hill. St. Luke’s is located across the street from Church of the Cross. We gather in the hall which is at the top of their parking lot. Maple syrup will be provided; however, you can bring other toppings to share.  Gluten-free pancakes and sausages will also be available. Please add your name to the sign-up sheet or call the church office to let us know you are attending. For more information please contact Janice Nelson.
Saturday Afternoon Board Games – February 25, 2023

Women in Faith will be hosting a games afternoon on Saturday, February 25, 3:00 to 4:30 PM in the Upper Hall. We will have tables set up with various games but feel free to bring your own. This event is open to all ages. Coffee and Tea as well as dessert will be served.
February is Black History Month

For Black History Month the BC Synod will be sharing an article each week in February lifting up a Black leader in British Columbia. Look for these here each of the four weeks in February. Each article includes links for further learning. You are encouraged to share articles in your own church newsletters. Included also is a graphic for sharing on your church social media. This campaign works best if people share in spaces and platforms where members of your ministries are most likely to see it. The synod will also be sharing on the BC Synod Facebook page making it easier to share to a church page. Sharing and engaging with these stories about local Black leaders is one small part we can play in increasing visibility and listening to Black voices in our midst. Stories compiled by Rev. Aneeta Saroop, Spirit of Life Lutheran Church, Vancouver, and Rev. Lyndon Sayers, Lutheran Church of the Cross, Victoria.

Nora Hendrix

She was also grandmother to famous music artist Jimmy Hendrix.

Pet Cafe, Multfaith UVic

There was
a birthday cake for a dog at this week’s Pet Cafe at the Multifaith Centre UVic. 50 students sang happy birthday. All dogs present received a special treat of whipped cream and shredded cheese. Pet Cafe is among the most successful weekly student gatherings on the UVic campus, organized and supported by the Anglican Church. Therapy dogs and their handlers come to campus every Wednesday where students spend time with the animals, visiting with each other, and enjoying coffee, tea, and cookies.
Running in the Spirit, Wednesdays 3 PM Multifaith Centre

Pr. Lyndon is leading Running In the Spirit, a weekly long run that departs from the Multfaith Centre on Wednesdays at 3 PM. We return by 4 PM. The long run, about 7 km, includes a time for meditation or breath work while running, and brief warm up and cool down. We run at a pace ideally people can continue a conversation while running. We gather weeks that UVic has classes in session. Not just limited to members of the UVic community. Everyone is welcome. Talk with Pr. Lyndon if you are unsure about your running conditioning: pastorlyndon@shaw.ca
Social activities and sport are one way we strengthen social ties on campus, the wider community, and support the work of Inclusive Christians at UVic.

The Multifaith Centre is located next to Finnerty Gardens and Parking Lot 6 at UVic. You must pay for parking on campus at the kiosk machines in the parking lot or via their app.
By Heart: Tuesday evening & Wednesday morning Zoom

By Heart books are on the way. Thank you to everyone who asked us to order a copy. Please make payment to to the church office for your copy. Let us know if you have any questions about that.

Next steps: Once books arrive we’ll distribute them and begin two weekly small groups. People are welcome to join over Zoom (no in-person gathering) either Tuesdays at 7:30 PM PST or Wednesday at 10 AM PST. It’s taking longer for the books to arrive than expected so we don’t know the exact start date but hope it will be soon. We sent out an organizing e-mail to people who expressed interest. If you did not receive an e-mail contact Pr. Lyndon at pastorlyndon@shaw.ca, who is handling communications, to be added to the list. Both Pr. Lyle and Pr. Lyndon will be sharing in leading the small groups.
