Canadian Youth Seeking A Safe Climate Future

Breakfast Presentation and Conversation
February 1st, 2020 9am
Breakfast Presentation and Conversation, Free or by Donation
Lutheran Church of the Cross (3787 Cedar Hill Road, Victoria BC)
Hosted by the Social Justice Committee

Two announcements/reminders for this weekend

A
reminder and encouragement to come to the breakfast and dialogue this Saturday, Feb. 1 at 9 - 11 AM at the Church with guests, Catherine Boies Parker, part of the legal team representing Canadian youth who have filed a lawsuit against the Federal Government for inaction over climate change, and Sierra Robinson, one of the Youth involved in the action. It is an excellent opportunity to hear and meet people directly involved in a national initiative to respond to the climate crisis. Breakfast is by donation. Please join this important conversation.

This Sunday, Feb. 2, Rev. Ruth Dantzer, Anglican Chaplain at UVic, and students Maya Bridger and Scott Constantine will lead in worship, sharing experiences from their Camino pilgrimage last summer. Everyone is encouraged to view a video of their pilgrimage at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z51_13uWKiM&app=desktop

Following worship, the Karren Stinson Bursary Committee will announce this year’s bursary recipient and invites everyone to stay for a soup and bun lunch together. Lunch is by donation, with all proceeds in support of the Bursary.

For more information you may visit the website, or contact the church office.
Council Opportunities
Dear members of Church of the Cross,
Please consider this an invitation to share your gifts and talents with the congregation as a
Board or Committee member.  Nominations are currently being accepted for members of the Board of Education and the Board of Worship. Please contact Angela Chorney (angela_chorney@hotmail.com) or Joanne Solomonson (jtsolomonson@gmail.com) for more information or to express your interest in these opportunities.
Thank you to the many people who contributed to Reconciling in Christ Sunday this year, including the beautiful rainbow of fabrics by Dana and Lynn, special songs and music, lighting, flags, name tags with pronouns, and hearing the story of Pr. Ralph Carl Wushke who has been reinstated as a pastor in the ELCIC after leaving Lutheran ministry for 30 years because he was openly gay, all in a spirit of hospitality. As we try new things, like including our pronoun on a nametag, it can feel strange and uncomfortable, and we appreciate people giving it a chance, especially those who have never experienced this before. It is a way of encouraging understanding and including other experiences of gender and sexual identity so that everyone may feel welcome. These are steps towards reconciliation as wider church and as a congregation, living into Jesus’ dominion of grace.

An Update on Present and Potential Areas of Development
As many are aware, Church of the Cross entered into an agreement with the
Shelbourne Community Kitchen to provide a portion of the undeveloped lower area under the Sanctuary for a temporary food storage facility for the Kitchen, including a walk-in cooler, smaller freezers, and shelving. The project became much more involved because of requirements from the District of Saanich for more permanent dividing walls, exits, fire separation, venting, etc. All of these changes are at the cost of the Kitchen, and can be removed at a later time. The project is anticipated to take an additional four to six weeks to complete. The hope of the Kitchen is to use the storage area beyond the original agreement which expires in September of 2020.
For the past eighteen months the Kitchen has also been searching for a new location. The current location, a house at 3541 Shelbourne Street, has a three year Temporary Use Permit that was renewed once and will expire for the final time in September of 2020. With the search unsuccessful to date, the Kitchen approached Church of the Cross about the possibility of leasing the Lower Hall (the Preschool will vacate the space at the end of June, 2020) as a new (temporary) location for the Kitchen.  The Council agreed to meet to explore the possibility. The Church and the Kitchen have met twice, and have agreed to engage an Architect to do a preliminary assessment of the suitability of the space, permits required, and possible costs to renovate the area for use by the Kitchen. We are asking that this report be completed in the next 2 – 3 weeks.
The Council approved a new Development Committee and appointed members, Grant Froyland, Garth Tastad and Helene Walker to meet with Kitchen, and to serve as members of the Joint Committee with Luther Court. The Committee will also explore other potential property developments.
And finally, while work continues on refining and responding to questions, there is no update on the Intergenerational Affordable Housing Project with Luther Court. Our applications for funding, rezoning and subdivision are in process and we continue to hope and pray that we receive news of approval for a next step. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact any member of the Development Committee: Helene, Garth or Grant, Council, Pastors Lyle or Lyndon, or the church office.
A Wedding Invitation – February 15, 2:30 PM
Adam McKenzie and Taryn G’mitroski invite people of Church of the Cross to share in their
wedding on Saturday, February 15 at 2:30 PM. A small reception will follow in the Upper Hall.
