In-Person Worship and Sunday School, Sunday 10 AM

Church Council and others continue to work to see that in-person worship is safer for everyone. There are new requirements from the Provincial Health Officer as of Tuesday, November 30. 2021 for “worship services.” Our current practises for in-person worship meet all of these requirements. Changes in the pandemic continue to raise concerns for health and safety, and we will adjust our plans as health orders change.

Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is the best protection for the health of yourself and others. We strongly encourage everyone who is eligible to receive both doses of the vaccine.

We will continue to livestream worship each Sunday.

December 5, Second Sunday of Advent
Everyone planning to come to worship and Sunday School are asked to follow these requirements:
  • If you are not feeling well and experiencing any Covid-19 related symptoms or if you are not vaccinated, please stay home and participate in worship online.
  • Wear a mask when entering the building and throughout worship and Sunday School.  (This is required of everyone age 12 and older. Children under 12 are encouraged to wear a mask.)
  • Observe social distancing.
  • Sanitize or wash hands as needed.
  • You are welcome to sing, but masks must be worn.
  • We will greet one another and share the peace at a distance.
  • Holy Communion will be served with bread and individual glasses of wine that are spaced in the trays. You may commune with bread or wine alone if you wish.
  • You are invited to greet and talk with others after worship with masks on. If refreshments are served in the Upper Hall, you may remove your mask when seated at a table for eating and drinking.
It is not required that people register for worship ahead of time or sign in as you arrive.

We will continue to make adjustments as needed and keep you informed of any changes.  Your feedback on your experience with in-person worship is valued.  Please let any member of Church Council, the Covid Leadership Team, Pastors, or the church office know of any questions, concerns or ideas for making in-person worship and Sunday School safer and meaningful for everyone.

2021 Financial Update from Church Council

Hello members and friends.

This week Council is sending a letter to members to review the many accomplishments and challenges of the year. Here are the highlights:

This year we give thanks for many accomplishments for which we are thankful:

Continued ministry! – We have continued to provide opportunities such as meaningful worship, pastoral support for members, Christian education, outreach programs, social justice and truth and reconciliation activities.
Renewal in worship! – We have been able to return to in-person worship and Sunday school.  Live streaming continues to include members and guests from afar.
The music! – The choir, musicians and new artist-in-residence are sounding great under the direction of our new Kantor, Nathan McDonald.
The mortgage! – Thanks to special donations by members, we have made extra mortgage payments again this year.  We have paid off about 70% of the original $1.3 million mortgage.  A remarkable achievement!
The Kitchen! – Shelbourne Community Kitchen now rents a significant portion of the lower level of the building, having completed (with their own funds) many renovations to their space, and re-opened to assist those with food insecurity in our wider community.
Other Improvements! – We used a portion of our memorial funds to perform much needed facility updates to the building inside and out.  This will improve safety, security, and a healthy rental income from its ongoing and increased use.

For our Church, while we have experienced many blessings worthy of celebration, the past year has been financially challenging.  We believe this is a good time to give you a financial update.

As of the end of October, our total operating costs were about $38,000 more than the revenue we received.  While we often are in deficit at this point in the year and offerings in November look very positive, this is a larger deficit than usual.  We have analyzed the revenue and expenses to understand how this year is different.  Our expenses overall have been consistent; despite the generous support of members, in what is clearly a trying time for all, our donations have been lower than expected.

In most years, we experience a rush of donations, from members and friends alike, during Advent and Christmas, which brings us back into financial balance.  It seems that many people take the opportunity at year’s end to give thanks for blessings received and recognize the needs of our Church and the wider community it serves.  Will that happen again (and even more) in this “extraordinary” year?  We don’t know.  If not, we will end the year in a deficit position.
While the current deficit is of concern and has the full attention of Council, there are many positive signs that we are thankful for and give us reason for optimism, for our future life and work together including our financial health.

Please think about pledging as well as the other ways in which you can participate in the life of our Church and help us meet the future together.  Pledge cards for 2022 have been distributed to all members and many have already responded thoughtfully and generously.  If you have any questions (at all) about pledging or anything in this update, please ask any Council member.

If you made a pledge in 2021 and would like to know how your giving is tracking against your pledge so far this year, please contact Barry Walker.

Heartfelt thanks to all who support the many ministries of Lutheran Church of the Cross.

Christmas Worship and Covid-19 Protocols

Our BC Provincial Health Officer has updated requirements for religious services. The new requirements are listed here under “worship services.” Church of the Cross is currently in compliance with these requirements - wearing masks, physical distancing, and less than 50% capacity in the building for Sunday worship. But Christmas Eve worship has typically exceeded this capacity. To allow for greater participation at Christmas, the Covid Leadership Team has decided that we will require proof of vaccination for Christmas worship. This may continue beyond Christmas depending on response and the requirements from the Provincial Health Officer. Everyone participating in Christmas worship will be required to show proof of vaccination and identification. Christmas worship will also be livestreamed for those who are not vaccinated and/or not comfortable worshiping in person. We are also asking that people register for one of the Christmas Eve worship times – 5 or 7 PM PST by emailing or calling the church office at lutheranchurchofthecross@shaw.ca, 250-477-6222. Again, we hope this will allow the participation of as many people as possible and ensure the greatest safety for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns please contact any member of the Covid-19 Leadership Team or the pastors through the church office.

Advent Bags
What’s in the Bag?
Pick-up information

Advent is both a Season of waiting and expectation as well, a time of preparing for the Christ Child’s arrival. God’s great gift to us, the Word made flesh.
Our gift to you is a humble and fun way to prepare both your hearts and home for a greener Christmas this year. Each bag provides ecological ideas, tips and a weekly devotional activity.
The bags are available for pick-up starting Nov. 21 throughout the week of Nov. 28 and onward. The Advent bags are located on a table in the entranceway. Please take one bag per family unit or individual member. If you are uncomfortable coming into the church, contact me to arrange a drop-off.
These reusable cloth bags are filled with ideas for the four Sundays in Advent and include a homemade treat. Enjoy that treat now, before it gets stale.
If you are gluten intolerant or sensitive, there are bags set apart and labeled GF containing a gluten-free treat from the Laughing Daughter Bakery on Salt Spring Island.
In case this all seems somewhat mysterious the Greening Committee members will share some information about the contents in short articles in Crossroads during Advent. Watch for these blurbs called, It’s in the Bag.

It’s in the Bag!

With so much busy Christmas preparation swirling all around us, it can be difficult to clear our minds and hearts for Christ’s coming. But the natural world of God’s creation is a place of beauty, wonder, excitement, curiosity, and calm where we an find God’s peace. Look for Week #2 in your Advent Bag for one way to get closer to God’s creation. Enjoy!

During this second week of waiting and preparation, we reflect on the candle of peace and contemplate our relationship with God - a gift that brings inner peace. Take time to sit in nature and observe the shifting priorities in all God's creatures.

The nature activities in the bag this week support our feathered friends in the coming months as they prepare for winter!
Upcoming Dates for Sunday School

Second Sunday in Advent & St. Nicholas, Dec. 5
Fourth Sunday in Advent, Dec. 19
Baptism of Jesus, January 9

We invite families with young kids to join us for Sunday school on the above upcoming Sundays.
Message from Bishop-elect Kathy Martin re: Ordination / Thanksgiving for Ministry

Dear Friends,

Advent Blessings to you all!

In this season of waiting, I’d like to add a couple of items to your calendar for early January that I hope you’ll look forward to celebrating with others in our synod.  The first is the service of Ordination for Bishop on Thursday, January 6th, 2022 and the second is a Thanksgiving for Ministry for Bishop Greg Mohr on January 7th, 2022.

As I thought about ordination I wondered if it might be nice for our synod to hold these events close together.  Bishop Greg and I have shared so much of our ministry it seemed fitting to also share these occasions.  So, I asked Bishop Greg if we could plan these two events together.  I hope you’ll join us for one or both!

The Ordination service will take place on January 6th, 2022 at 4:00 pm (PST) at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2350 – 148 Street, Surrey.  It will also be live-streamed so that those who are not able to attend in person may also join us in worship.

Due to COVID protocols, there will be limited in-person seating available.  Therefore, if you are interested in attending in person, you must pre-register by Tuesday, December 21st, be fully vaccinated, meet COVID screening requirements on the day of the event and wear a mask.

To ensure representation from across our synod we are not simply opening it up in a ‘first come-first served’ basis.  Depending on how many people wish to attend there may not be enough seating for everyone, but we will confirm your place as soon as possible so you can plan.  To add your name to the pre-registration list, please click here.

For those travelling from a distance, travel bursaries may be available.  Please contact the BC synod office for more information.

Thanksgiving for Ministry – upon the Retirement of Bishop Greg Mohr
click here to download the invitation

On Friday, January 7th, 2022 at 8:00 pm (PST) we will gather online to give thanks to God for Bishop Greg’s ministry to our synod and offer our blessings as he begins his retirement.  Quoting Bishop Greg the evening “program will include music, long boring speeches, and reminiscences.”  I am certain the planning committee will make it a very enjoyable evening for all of us!

With thanks and in hopeful anticipation,
Kathy
