Brian Wismath’s Farewell August 22

You are invited to join us in person for Brian’s farewell on Sunday, August 22, 11:30 AM to 1 PM following worship in the Memorial Garden at Church of the Cross (South side of the building). This is a come and go event to give people an opportunity to thank Brian in person for his time with us as Cantor/Director of Music these past eight years. Refreshments will be provided by Board of Worship. Wearing masks is recommended.

There will be no virtual coffee over Zoom that day.

Video Alert

On July 8th, a video series called Acts of Creation was posted to our Lutheran Church of the Cross YouTube page, with the link to the weekly video found here in Crossroads.

Our August 5th, 2021 recording features artist Lynn Jones talking about her approach to using all natural and local products in both her art and daily life. Tune in for the short video recorded at the UVic Finnerty Garden last month with the link found
here.

As summer speeds by, the Greening Committee is active and preparing for the Time of Creation in Sept-Oct. We will host an in-person and live streaming event with a public speaker talking about climate and the upcoming UN sponsored Conference of Partners 26, or COPS26, an   annual gathering of world leaders talking about climate change.
Mark your calendars for Sept.11th 9:30-11:30

Watch for more news about the event in the weeks to come, but you can read about the speaker, Beth Eden, on the Lutheran Church of the Cross webpage, with the link found

Organ Recital: Wednesday, August 23, at 7 pm

In 1970 Victoria organ builder Hugo Spilker built the pipe organ at Broad View United.
Now, after 50 years of service to the congregation, the pipe organ is destined for a new home.
As a swan song, an organ recital planned for Wednesday, August 25th, at 7 pm.

The programme includes JS Bach’s Prelude & Fugue in G Major ( BWV 541 ), Ralph Vaughan Williams’
beautiful prelude on Rhosemedre, and compositions by the famous Vancouver composer Denis Bédard.

PJ Janson will be joined by oboist Anna Betuzzi to perform some rarely-heard pieces for organ and oboe by
JL Krebs, as well as the unpublished Meditation on Hymn Tune 'Michael' by the Edinburgh composer Steve Richer.
New Season of Creation 2021 Celebration Guide

The theme for this year's Season of Creation is A Home for All? Renewing the Oikos of God. Oikos is the Greek word for "home" or "household." The Celebration Guide contains liturgical resources, prayers and meditations, and calls to action and advocacy, and can be used by individuals and congregations, to nurture faithful imagination to restore right, just, and sustainable relationships with the Earth and among all species. To download your Guide and for more information, please click here.
Inviting ELCIC Members to Give Their Feedback on Communion Practices During the Pandemic

The Faith, Order, and Doctrine (FOD) Committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) has recently been given the following task by the National Church Council (NCC): That the Faith, Order, and Doctrine Committee examine the theology and practice of virtual celebration of the sacrament of Holy Communion with recommendations for practices to be shared, through an interim or final report, with NCC by March 2022.

The FOD Committee is aware that over the past year, worshipping communities in the ELCIC have had various practices when it comes to communion. Some have offered online communion while others have fasted from the sacrament. We would very much like to hear from members both rostered and lay across the church, about what their experience has been. Questions include: What insights do you have from the past year of either participating in the sacrament or abstaining from it? What are your thoughts and reflections on this?

Please send your one-page description to Rev. Dr. Ali Tote, Assistant to the National Bishop for Faith, Order, and Doctrine at
atote@elcic.ca. Submissions must be received by August 20, 2021. Your input would be a great help to the committee in its work.

Note: In addition, rostered members will receive another survey by email soon, when it becomes available.
