Farewell and God’s Blessings to Brian and Emily – This Sunday, August 22
We will give thanks and say farewell and God’s Blessings this Sunday in worship and at a reception following to Brian Wismath, the congregation’s Cantor/Music Director for the past 8 years, and to partner Emily, as they move to Ontario to be closer to family and pursue new work.
The plan for the morning is:
Members of the Choir who have indicated they can attend will join in worship, meeting at 9 AM for rehearsal. (Only members of the choir are invited to be in-person for worship this Sunday)
Near the end of worship, we will present Brian and Emily with gifts and prayers of blessing and Brian will say a few words.
Following worship, beginning at 11:30 AM, until 1 PM, everyone who is able and comfortable is invited to come to the church for a drop-in outdoor reception in the memorial garden on the south side of the church building to say thanks and farewell to Brian and Emily in-person. Individual refreshments and snacks will be served. Wearing masks is recommended. There will be no Zoom coffee time this Sunday.
Thank you to Lennor Stieda, Barry Walker, Laura Cochrane, Jeanie Stann, Dana McKee, and Don Storch for their assistance in preparing the gifts and the reception. If you have any questions, please call the church office or contact pastorlyle@shaw.ca.

Video Alert and Other Greening News
Its’ hard to believe that August 19th marks the 7th recording of a Lutheran Church of the Cross member sharing their personal expression of care and concern for Gods’ creation. The Greening Committee has been pleased to present the Acts of Creation series, with prior videos available for viewing on the LCC YouTube page, and the link to the current feature, found here in Crossroads.
Todays’ video is a loving tribute to the beauty of Gods’ creation by Sherry Coughlin. Tune in to find out at the link found here. When I first saw the clip a few weeks ago, I was instantly reminded of a few of my favorite hymns celebrating the Creator. I could almost hear and sing the words to; This is my Fathers World, Let All Things Now Living, and For the Beauty of the Earth. See which of your favorite songs the video conjures up for you as you watch. I also connected the video with Martin Luther’s simple, powerful, and always needed reminder that:
Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone,
But in every leaf in spring.
As August speeds by, we set our sights on the quickly approaching Season of Creation, Sept. 1-Oct. 4, and resuming in-person worship. What a joy Sept. 12, 2021 will be. In preparation for the day and season, see the 2021 Season of Creation Celebration guide: A Home for All? Renewing the Oikos of God. There was an article with link for the guide in last weeks’ Crossroads, to either download or read online. I took away some helpful suggestions for my individual devotions and ways to engage with the wider faith community in activities that speak up, and speak out for God’s Creation.
Another opportunity to prepare is to attend the Greening Committee’s in-person and live-streaming event on Sept. 11th, 9:30-11:30. This will be an informative session with public speaker, Beth Eden, talking about climate change and the upcoming UN COPS26. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) latest report on climate change came out last week, outlining the dire need for governments to act to reduce carbon emissions. The UN Secretary General called the report a “code red for humanity”, saying we “must sound the death knell of coal and fossil fuels before they destroy our planet.” Those are timely words as a federal election is on the horizon for fall. In light of the urgent need for global change, I know I will listen carefully for the politician’s response to this crisis and their political commitment to act to secure the planet for all future Canadians.
Check out the links for the Sept. 11th Greening event on the LCC webpage here, and watch for more information appearing here in CR.
Thanks,
Susan B

Haiti was hit with a destructive earthquake on August 14. With numbers expected to rise, it is so far reported that more than 1,900 people were killed and over 10,000 injured by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that devastated parts of the country. Hundreds are still missing, thousands of families have lost their homes and schools, bridges and other vital infrastructure were destroyed. Rescue efforts are being further hampered by tropical storm Grace, all at a time when the country is already grappling with acute poverty and food insecurity, political unrest, and COVID-19.
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) together with Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is inviting you to pray for the people of Haiti, and to consider making a gift. Donations received will provide emergency shelter, sanitation, hygiene, and trauma care for those affected.
Individuals and congregations wishing to support relief efforts can donate as follows:
- Make a designated offering donation for "Haiti Crisis" through any ELCIC congregation.
- Send a cheque made payable to CLWR and mailed to CLWR, 600-177 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5. Please indicate that you wish to contribute to "Haiti Crisis."
- Call CLWR at 1-800-661-2597 (locally at 204-694-6502), Monday to Thursday, 9:00-16:00 CDT to donate by credit card or go online at: clwr.org/Haiti

Save the Date for Julius in October
The Social Justice Committee and Church of the Cross invite you to save the date of Tuesday October 5th at 7 pm to meet Julius Maslovat, the first speaker in the 2021/22 series on anti-racism.
Julius Maslovat was 2 1/2 years old when he became the youngest prisoner in Germany's Buchenwald concentration camp. Both of his parents were killed in the Holocaust. Maslovat says. “I survived because of other people, people who were concerned enough, despite their own condition, to help someone else.”
Julius tells his story in a powerful documentary Why am I here? The documentary summarizes Maslovat’s journey to discover his own past and to learn about the people who kept him alive. The purpose of the film moves beyond documenting a tragic event into encouraging viewers to learn about injustices in our current world as the audience is encouraged to ask themselves the question 'Why am I here'?

The programme includes JS Bach’s Prelude & Fugue in G Major ( BWV 541 ), Ralph Vaughan Williams’
