Development Signs on Site
Part of the requirements for the rezoning and development permit applications with the District of Saanich for the potential development of the Affordable Intergenerational Housing Project with Luther Court are signs on site informing the community of the application. The signs were scheduled to go up this past week on Cedar Hill Road and on Cedar Hill Crossroad. The application is awaiting review by the Advisory Design Panel of the District. We hope and pray that there will be sufficient progress with the district to allow for our submitting an application for the next funding call with BC Housing in early September. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the church office or a member of the Development Committee.

Note of Appreciation
On behalf of the Congregational Council I wish to express our sincere appreciation to Helene Walker and the COVID-19 Leadership Team who are working hard to have everything in place for the resumption of in-person Worship. Members of the team are Helene Walker (coordinator), Craig Knight, Janet Molnar, Laura Cochrane, Lynn Jones, Rory Molnar, Nicky Ni, Pastor Lyle and Pastor Lyndon.
Our congregation is blessed to have medical experts and people on the front lines who willingly share information when asked, including: Dr. Maureen Boylan, Dr. Laura Phillips, Karen Johnson-Lefsrud and Jeanie Stann, thank you so much for sharing your expertise.

Most sincerely, Joanne Solomonson, Congregational Chair
Treasurer’s mid-year report to the Congregation

Given that we have just passed the mid-year mark for 2020 and are now several months into the Covid-19 pandemic, an update of the Church’s financial situation is in order.

At the beginning of March, at our Annual General Meeting, the congregation approved a budget for 2020 that anticipated a $33,000 deficit on the operations of the Church. Since then, the world has been turned upside down as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This has meant a major disruption in almost everyone’s life. For our Church, this has meant worship changing from a live, in-person event to livestreaming and connecting face-to-face via “Zoom,” or something similar.

Despite all of the changes, there is some good news to report; as of the end of June, we are only running about a $5,000 deficit on operations, a number that is much lower than expected. The two main reasons for this are that: (1) although income has not risen by as much as we hoped based on last year’s pledges, it was boosted by an unexpected and generous $10,000 gift from the BC Synod and (2) spending has not increased from last year’s level, primarily because many of our plans for this year have had to be put on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions.

While we remain in somewhat uncharted territory as the pandemic goes on, you can be assured that your Church Council will continue to closely monitor events as we move along the path back to a safe resumption of in-person worship. As always, your support in all of this is greatly appreciated.
Thank you to phone call volunteers
Thank you to the volunteers who have been calling people of the congregation to check-in over the past four months of the pandemic, and to the Board of Care for Communities, and Chair, John Baty, for coordinating the calling. The care expressed by this contact was much appreciated! Thank you to Tarynn, Christopher, Ruth, Thiago, Maya, Ralferd, Nicky, Barry, Lynn, Susanne, Don, Cheryl, Craig, Ann, Janice and John.

Journey Interrupted - An Online EnRoute Event
Join hundreds of youth from across Canada on August 22, 2020 for an online
#EnRoute event that we are calling
Journey Interrupted

We are all on a journey. But, sometimes things don’t go according to plan… Jesus was on a journey too: a journey that led him up mountain passes and down wilderness trails; with plenty of interruptions along the way. What do the interruptions we face teach us about ourselves, where we’ve come from, where we are going, and where we belong?

The event will livestream on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube at:4:00pm (PDT),
Youth Groups are encouraged to host watch parties during the video and continue the conversation after the video event ends on Zoom, Facetime, Meet, or the platform of their choice.
Youth are invited to submit a video (due by August 1, 2020) to be included in #JourneyInterrupted.

Lutheran Church of the Cross - Annual Spring Cleanup 2020 Continues

To those who have been able to help to date, Thank you! for your work around and in the church building. The building and grounds are much improved! Some have worked in small groups, physically distancing, while others worked alone. Your contributions are all making a big difference to keeping our building and spaces clean and in good shape. Every little bit helps. If you are still able to help, you may contact the church office at lutheranchurchofthecross@shaw.ca or call 250-477-6222 for the sign up.
