Covid-19 update - A trial of in-person Holy Communion worship this Sunday, August 16 and planning for beginning in-person worship, Sunday August 30

This Sunday, August 16 at 10 AM, we will once again livestream worship, and a few people from the Covid-19 Leadership Team, the Board of Worship and Church Council will be present at the church to experience worshipping in-person together using the protocols and procedures we have put in place following the Guidelines for Faith Based Organizations by the BC Centre for Disease Control. We will evaluate this experience in planning for beginning in-person worship on August 30, provided cases on the Island remain at current low levels.
Holy Communion this Sunday, August 16

As part of worship this Sunday we will celebrate Holy Communion. Those who wish to join in celebrating Holy Communion at home are invited to prepare a small amount of bread and wine (or grape juice if required) on a plate and in a cup, prior to worship. You may also wish to light a candle(s) as part of worshipping at home. At the time of Holy Communion, you are invited to have the elements in front of you, join in the words of thanksgiving and to lift the bread and wine at the same time as the presiding minister. At the time of Communing, share the bread with yourself or with one another with the words: “The body of Christ given for you.” and “The blood of Christ shed for you.” After Communing, or following worship, please consume the remaining bread and wine. This invitation is for those who wish to and feel comfortable joining in Communion at home during worship. Those who do not feel comfortable are welcome to observe Holy Communion celebrated at the church as we trust in God’s Spirit and gifts of grace offered to all as and where we are. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please contact the Church office or Pastor Lyndon or Pastor Lyle.
Registering for in-person worship on August 30

Worship will be limited to 35 people in the congregationIf you wish to join in worship on Sunday, August 30, please email or call the church office to indicate your intention to be present. Based on the experience we gain and lessons learned from in-person worship in August, we will plan for in-person worship into the fall. We will continue to livestream worship every Sunday as well.

About the Topic
Distant Together: Sponsoring Refugees during a Global Pandemic
Globally, refugees and displaced persons have been affected disproportionately by the COVID19 pandemic. Only a small number of countries offer resettlement opportunities, but far below what is needed to provide homes for those in desperate need.

In 2019 Canada was the largest resettlement country in the world, due in part to a long-standing private refugee sponsorship program that allows ordinary Canadians to complement the Government’s resettlement program. Under this program, sponsors continued referring refugees during the Pandemic, but only with the assurance of having the necessary funds needed to support the refugees during their first year in Canada.

Volunteer Needed for Outdoor Saturday Garage Sales

The Social Justice Community has an opportunity to join Broad View United Church (formerly St Aidan's) on Saturday August 22nd at their outdoor Saturday Garage Sales occurring throughout August.

There is no charge to SJC for setting up tables.  This is a good opportunity to raise money for our Refugee Fund and it allows SJC members to remove the jewellery & accessories collected and stored in garages or basements since the postponement of the fall Fundraiser. Any items unsold will be donated to the BVUC Thrift Store.

The Social Justice Community is looking for volunteers to help with shifts on Saturday Aug 22nd between 9 am-2 pm.  People are needed for: set-up 9 am - 10 am, to oversee tables during the sale (10 am - 1 pm), and to help pack up remaining items from 1 - 2 pm, take down and sanitize tables.

To ensure maximum safety for all....
- we will follow BC Health Authority COVID 19 regulations/precautions
- we will piggy-back with what BVUC has in place for the sale: directional arrows, chalk lines on pavement, limiting per tables, physical distancing, hand sanitizing,
- we will wear masks & gloves and make a contact list of attendees and volunteers
If you are able to volunteer on Saturday August 22nd between 9 am to 2 pm please contact Susanne Standeven

SALISH SEA FESTIVAL: A WEEK OF LANTERNS

Due to COVID-19, the annual Salish Sea Lantern Festival and parade cannot proceed as planned; however, in its place ArtSea brings you the Salish Sea Festival: A Week of Lanterns, August 16-22, 2020. This is an opportunity for everyone to participate in building community spirit.

ArtSea is offering several opportunities to build-your-own lantern, with online lantern-building tutorials and small, in-person workshops. During the week of August 16th to 22nd, we invite the community to light up their lanterns (with battery-operated lights) each night at 7pm. Lanterns can be displayed on a front lawn, hung from a balcony, or displayed in a front window; anywhere that they are visible to the community and can be enjoyed by everyone. And there are prizes for the best lantern display (see below). This is a wonderful opportunity to be creative and be part of a community project in a time when community is most important.
