Video Alert and Other Greening News

On July 8th, a video series called Acts of Creation was posted to our Lutheran Church of the Cross YouTube page, with the link to the weekly videos found here in Crossroads.

The August 12th, 2021 edition of that series features Pastor Lyndon Sayers. Tune in to find out at the link found
here.

Lyndon served as our video recorder the day in Finnerty Gardens when Lynn Jones, Joanne Henning, and I each nervously practiced recording our videos in front of an iPad and microphone close to our mouths. It was funny how uncomfortable each of us felt being recorded but that feeling provides a renewed appreciation for all of our worship leaders and the seeming ease they have with the process. Enjoy Pt. 6 of our series. We look forward to sharing a few more videos that will stretch into September when we celebrate the Season of Creation.

As August speeds by and we anticipate being together again soon, the Greening Committee invites you to an in-person and live-streaming event on Sept. 11th, 9:30-11:30 AM. We will host an engaging session with public speaker Beth Eden, as she talks about climate change and the upcoming UN COPS26.  See the links for the LCC webpage
here, and watch for more information appearing here in CR.

Mark your calendars for Sept.11th 9:30-11:30, and in the meantime, send your greening news, ideas, tips, or feedback about the series to me:

Thanks,
Susan B

Amazing Journey Day Camp: an outdoor adventure beyond our backyard

Amazing Journey Day Camp has been another success. Today marks Day Four of the five day camp. A huge shoutout to all the organizers from Church of the Cross, St. Luke’s, and St. George’s (the latter congregation hosted the camp in their outdoor space). Holding the camp in-person again has been wonderful for the campers, counselors, leaders, nurses, and organizers. Having the camp solely outside and smaller numbers than previous years has led to peaceful gatherings as kids gathered in small groups inside tents to begin each day. The various stations of woodworking, crafts, storytelling and art, and games were held around the St. George’s space. These photos offer a brief glimpse into the week’s activities and some familiar faces. The camp is a testimony of how great it is to join in song and praise as the body of Christ, caring for the health and safety of everyone participating.

Thursdays in Black Launches Bible Study Series

Thursdays in Black is organizing a Series of Bible Studies by Ambassadors, which began on August 5th to help people reflect on and respond to gender-based violence. The first series of six reflections has been launched to recognize National Women's Month in South Africa. The reflections which will be shared weekly, provide diverse perspectives which can be used by individuals and churches. Susan Mark Zira from the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria offers the first study, "Speak Out Boldly" based on Numbers 27:1-11. Bishop Susan Johnson is a Thursdays in Black Ambassador.

A Request from Lutheran Theological Seminary

Early this autumn, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Saskatoon will be receiving a visit from an evaluation committee of the ATS (Association of Theological Schools), which grants accreditation to North American graduate schools of theology.

We invite you to submit a brief written statement (max. 500 words) to President Harrison commenting on the seminary’s qualifications for accreditation, focusing on LTS’s fulfillment of its mission (see “Our Mission,” below).

Our Mission:  Lutheran Theological Seminary, a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, nurtures and challenges all people for Christ-centered leadership and witness for God’s mission in the world.

Organ Recital: Wednesday, August 25, at 7 pm

In 1970 Victoria organ builder Hugo Spilker built the pipe organ at Broad View United.
Now, after 50 years of service to the congregation, the pipe organ is destined for a new home.
As a swan song, an organ recital planned for Wednesday, August 25th, at 7 pm.

The programme includes JS Bach’s Prelude & Fugue in G Major ( BWV 541 ), Ralph Vaughan Williams’
beautiful prelude on Rhosemedre, and compositions by the famous Vancouver composer Denis Bédard.

PJ Janson will be joined by oboist Anna Betuzzi to perform some rarely-heard pieces for organ and oboe by
JL Krebs, as well as the unpublished Meditation on Hymn Tune 'Michael' by the Edinburgh composer Steve Richer.
