We will continue to livestream worship each Sunday.

A Meatless Recipe to Try
The fifth in a series of vegetarian recipes shared by the Greening Committee during Lent.

CRUSTLESS QUICHE

The recipe is very flexible, use the vegetables you have, onion, pepper, celery, zucchini, carrots. Milk can be a skinny 1%  or a richer ½ and ½. I used old cheddar cheese, but you could use the cheese you have, or mix of several kinds. You could also put strips of red pepper on the top of the quiche before baking. With a green salad, makes a complete meal. Enjoy.

This recipe is for 2-3 servings, easy to double ingredients to serve 5-6. Bake the larger quiche for 10 minutes longer.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Have a pie plate or casserole dish and vegetable oil to stray the dish.
Dice, medium: One half onion, one stick of celery, 1/2 red pepper. Sauté in 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat – 5 minutes until vegetables become somewhat soft.
Dump the vegetables into a bowl, add 3 Tspb flour, ½ tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp ground black pepper. Mix until flour coats all the vegetables. Then add ¾ cup grated old cheddar cheese.
Spray baking dish with vegetable oil. Add vegetable mix. Beat 2 eggs add ¾ cup milk Pour milk egg mixture over vegetables.
Bake for 25 minutes until top is golden. Let sit 5 mins, slice and serve.

April 4 is Refugee Rights Day in Canada!

(Image:  Canadian Council for Refugees)

What is Refugee Rights Day, and why does it matter?

April 4 is the anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada’s 1985 Singh decision.
In this decision the Supreme Court found that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects the fundamental rights of refugees. The Court decided that ‘everyone’ includes refugee claimants in the sentence: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Sect. 7)

Refugee claimants are therefore entitled to an oral hearing, in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice and international law. Subsequent to this court decision, the Immigration and Refugee Board was created to ensure that all refugee claimants have access to a fair hearing before an expert independent tribunal.

And yet, in spite of the progress made over the past decades, the fundamental rights of refugees are not always reflected in our country’s policies and practices.  Namely, refugee rights advocates continue to challenge the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) between Canada and the United States of America. A court challenge brought by the Canadian Council for Refugees, the Canadian Council of Churches, and Amnesty International is now headed for the Supreme Court of Canada which will review the constitutionality of the STCA. Under the STCA, most refugee claimants who arrive at an official port of entry seeking protection in Canada are turned back to the USA. This practice has particularly negative impacts on women fleeing gender-based persecution, in violation of section 15 of the Canadian Charter.

As refugee crises escalate in many parts of the world, let us uphold the fundamental principles enshrined internationally in the 1951 Refugee Convention and nationally in the Canadian Constitution.

On behalf of the Social Justice Committee

The Social Justice Committee is collecting individually wrapped, store bought snack food items for distribution to the shelters and programs that support the homeless. There is a basket in the narthex waiting to be filled to the brim with treats that are sure to put a smile on the faces of hungry teens and adults!

Threshold Housing Society
Fifth in the Social Justice Lenten Series

It began in 1990:  Through his interaction with people living on the street, Anglican Street Chaplin Rick Sandberg realized that the lack of affordable housing was the issue keeping many people homeless. Together with the Christ Church Cathedral Social Justice Committee, Threshold Housing Society (THS) was formed. The original mission was to help at risk adults and families, but it quickly became apparent that the need for youth housing was in great demand. Today THS offers housing and support services for homeless youth, ages 15-24.

Housing and programs offered through THS are in high demand, and it is noted by Board Director Don Storch that there is an estimated 200 – 300 unhoused youth at any time in the CRD. To help address this situation, THS has programs in development that will increase the number of beds and space available to those homeless youth.

Our gifts of treats and sweets will surely put a smile on the faces of those living in one of Threshold’s five houses. Thank you!  If you would like more ways how you can help, check out

Coats & Blankets for Our Place

As is our custom, we will be collecting coats and blankets for the good folk at Our Place on Palm Sunday – April 10. You are invited to bring new or gently used coats, warm clothing items, blankets and sleeping bags to worship, and lay them at the Table before service, where they will be blessed and taken to Our Place for distribution to those most needing something warm and cozy during these chilly spring nights.

If you have items to donate and are unable or uncomfortable dropping by the church, contact Sherry Coughlin by April 7 to make arrangements for a pickup by one of our Social Justice Committee members.

On behalf of the Our Place family and the Social Justice Committee, thank you!
