Annual Spring Cleanup - Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM

The Board of Trustees are hosting the annual Spring Clean Up at Lutheran Church of the Cross. A sign up sheet with
a list of tasks available here. And a paper copy has been posted on the board in the hallway on the way to the Upper Hall. We plan to get together on Saturday, May 6, 9:00 am until 12 noon. If that doesn’t work for you, then you are invited to come during previous the week and work on a project of your choice - if you complete it or not write down what’s been done. We thank you for your efforts.

We would like to complete the most visible aspects before Mothers Day on May 14.
You can contact Nicky at the Church Office to schedule your favourite task, whether on May 6 or anytime the building is open. The church office is open Monday through Thursday 9 AM to 3 PM or by appointment if you need access outside these hours.

There are a wide range of interior and exterior tasks to suit your ability. Trustees greatly appreciate your participation and hope to be on site encouraging all participate.
Multifaith UVic AGM

Multifaith UVic held its AGM on April 19 at the Multifaith Centre beside Finnerty Gardens. It offered an opportunity for spiritual care providers, community representatives, and university leaders to come together to discuss the previous year and plan ahead for the future. Pictured here are Pr. Ruth Dantzer (Anglican), David Batterham (Baha’i), and Pr. Lyle McKenzie speaking to the MOU, which grounds the partnership between Multifaith and the university. Good to gather together and lift up one another's work. There also was a video of uplifting comments from students about the diverse programming and work at Multifaith, including Inclusive Christians which Church of the Cross supports.

Thanks you for 20 years!

A cake honouring over 20 years of iPad Group gathering at Church of the Cross. They have shared about using tech, about their lives, and have been building community together. Thanks to Gerry Saleski for the leadership. While they have officially met for the last time, there are some people who would like to see the group continue in a different form. Stay tuned.
Iftar Celebration with BC Muslims

Muslims in BC held an Iftar celebration this past Monday at the BC legislature, breaking fast. Guests were given a box of special treats as Ramadan ends and Eid begins. Pr. Lyndon represented Church of the Cross at the gathering. Good to see a diverse group of religious and political leaders joining the celebration.
This concert features Nathan McDonald, Kantor at Church of the Cross, as a guest soloist.

By Heart – Tuesday, April 25 at 7:30 PM, Wednesday, April 26 at 10 AM

The “By Heart” book and discussion groups on Luther’s Small Catechism resume next week at the regular times. We will be looking at Chapter 6. The Zoom links will be sent to participants by email. If you are not receiving the email and would like to join the conversation, please contact Pastor Lyndon or Pastor Lyle or the church office.

Advance Care Planning Workshop - May 11th and 18th 10 a.m.

“We plan for birthdays, weddings, and even dinner - so why don't we plan our health care?
What health care decisions are made when you are no longer capable of making them yourself? Who acts as your Representative or Substitute Decision Maker? What are your values, wishes and beliefs?

These are all questions that get addressed during your advance care planning process.
Although Advance Care Planning is often thought of as planning for the end of life, it is really about planning for life, up to and including death.

It is a process of thinking about what is important to you. What are your beliefs, values and wishes for your care?

Advance care planning is also about sharing those wishes, especially with your substitute decision-maker (the person who will speak for you if you can’t speak for yourself) so that your family and friends know how you would like to be cared for in the future.

But lots of resources have too much medical, and legal jargon it's hard to know where to start. This two-part workshop helps you tackle planning with confidence. You will finish having the tools and skills to start the conversation with your friends, loved ones, and health care providers.

Each session is approximately an hour and a half, and will help participants get started working on their own plans, and having conversations with their loved ones”

This workshop is being hosted by the Board of Education and will be led by Marta Lefsrud, Community Education and Projects Lead with Victoria Hospice.

If you want to attend this workshop, there is a sign-up sheet outside the church office, or you may contact the church office by email or phone to sign-up.

Learning About Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that can impact social interactions, communication, interests or behaviour. ASD affects each individual differently. Children and youth can exhibit a wide variety of characteristics. It is not caused by parents or the way a child is raised.

Children and people with ASD can have have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention. Some individuals can be highly sensitive to changes in their environment. Early interventions based on an individual's needs and abilities can help children and youth learn to navigate their world effectively, enjoy family life and attain success at school and throughout life.

Communication styles of children and people with ASD can have a range of responses. Some just need more processing time before making a verbal response, others may respond with sign language, and some may not respond verbally or make eye contact. Even when there is no visible response they are still observing, listening and processing. Patience and understanding by others that are part of the situation is needed and appreciated by individuals, their parents and family members.

How to approach a child with autism spectrum disorder.

Each child with autism spectrum disorder is different. This means the approach to and support of each child is not a one method suits all.

Follow basic greetings when saying “hi” to the child.  Smile, look at the child, and say their name, just like you would any other person.  They are understanding more than it may appear.

When greeting the child use one or two short statements rather than asking a question. Comments that don't need a response are more relaxing for the child. On first meeting the child may not look at you, or may not respond verbally. They are still processing, observing and listening.

Over time the child may feel more comfortable and may respond with eye contact or a response.

Eye contact can be difficult for children on the autism spectrum. Repeating a simple hello again, and again at each meeting is appreciated each time you see the child.  They thrive on routine and repetition. Use short greetings such as,  “I'm happy to see you today. It's a nice sunny day.”

Some children on the spectrum can be sensitive to touch, noise, smells and sounds. The best policy is simply don’t touch a child or ask the parent first. Some children may like doing “high five” after meeting someone several times and once a person becomes familiar to them.

Include a child with autism spectrum disorder wherever they can be included with other children.  Like all children they need opportunities to interact with same age peers. Some may wander about the room when in a new environment. Moving around can be a way for the child to self regulate and cope with the new environment. When a child becomes dysregulated and starts to struggle in the setting they may benefit from moving to a quieter area for a sensory break or quiet time . Then returning when the child is ready. Other community members can help and show their support by understanding and accepting the child's need to wander or come and go. This acceptance is appreciated. .

Note: Folks from the special needs community were consulted for their input. Many thanks to them for their time and assistance.
